Lifetime has announced it will be producing and broadcasting a film biopic of Whitney Houston and actress Angela Bassett will be directing.

Houston, who died in 2012 aged 48, led a turbulent yet highly fruitful life, marked by her phenomenal successes in both the music and film industry. However, her marriage to Bobby Brown was certainly difficult with rumours surrounding his infidelity, drug use and legal difficulties becoming well known and widely discussed. The couple married in 1992 and divorced in 2007, they have one daughter together Bobbi Kristina (now 21 years old).

The Lifetime film will chronicle Houston's relationship with Brown from their first meeting through their marriage to the height of their celebrity. Interest in Houston's family remains high and her daughter has become the focus of media attention. Bobbi married Nick Gordon in January of this year, as TMZ reported, and sparked some controversy as many considered Gordon her "adoptive brother". Gordon lived with the Houston-Brown family during his formative years but Houston never officially adopted him.

Bassett will make her directional debut on the film, currently entitled Whitney Houston. The actress has most recently appeared in American Horror Story: Coven as Marie Laveau but has appeared in hundreds of films including Notorious and The Score. She is also no stranger to appearing in biopics as she has portrayed numerous figures including Tina Turner and Rosa Parks.

Bassett has described her excitement at working on the project and, as THR reported, said "I have such regard for both Whitney's and Bobby's amazing talents and accomplishments, and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story. Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I'm beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world."

Whitney Houston is slated to be broadcast on Lifetime in 2015.
