Actor Will Smith has posted a heartfelt tribute to his friend Prince, revealing he spoke to the musician the night before his death. Writing on Facebook, Smith expressed his shock and sadness at hearing Prince had died on Thursday (April 21st) aged just 57.

“I am stunned and heartbroken,” Smith wrote. “I just spoke with him last night. Today, Jada & I mourn with all of you the loss of a beautiful poet, a true inspiration, and one of the most magnificent artists to ever grace this earth.”

Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith also posted her own Facebook tribute to Prince writing: "Prince was one of the first artists to put me on game in regard to the industry. He was not only a genius artist, he was kind, funny, beautifully eccentric, curious, imaginative, magical, spiritual, rebellious and extremely intelligent.”

"He showed me early the power of living one's life by one's own rules and no one else's," she added. "There are really no words to express what we have all lost today. To quote my friend Paress, 'Music has lost its heart beat.' Rest in peace Beauty…Jada."

Smith’s tribute to Prince echoes that of countless other celebrities and artists who have joined fans all over the world in their mourning. On twitter Madonna wrote: “He Changed The World!! A True Visionary. What a loss. I'm Devastated. This is Not A Love Song.”

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger added: “I am so saddened to hear of Prince's passing. Prince was a revolutionary artist, a wonderful musician and composer.” Prince was also remembered by President Barack Obama who tweeted: "'A strong spirit transcends rules,' Prince once said—and nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative.”
