Woody Allen's existential comedy Irrational Man starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone heads this year's Cannes Film Festival line-up, announced Thursday. The 2015 festival also sees the premiere of Natalie Portman's directorial debut A Tale of Love and Darkness, adapted from Amos Oz's novel.

Set on a small time college campus, Irrational Man follows a philosophy professor in an existential crisis who gives his life new purpose when he enters into a relationship with a student.

Elsewhere on the bill, Senna director Asif Kapadia premieres his Amy Winehouse documentary Amy while Peter Docteur - whose stunning animation Up opened the festival six year ago - brings his new movie Inside Out before its release in July.

All of the mentioned films screen out of competition, though Gus Van Sant's Sea of Tees - the American-Japanese suicide story starring Matthew McConaughey - will vie for the Palme d'Or. Denis Villeneuve will show his crime drama Sicario while Yorgos Lanthimos brings The Lobster.

Judging this year's in-competition titles will be a jury headed by the Coen brothers. The rest of the jury is yet to be named.

Last year's festival offered a launch-pad to the likes of Foxcatcher, Mr Turner and Leviathan.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux announced the line-up in Paris on Thursday, also launching a campaign to limit the amount of 'selfies' taken on the red carpet.

"We don't want to prohibit it, but we want to slow down the process of selfies on the steps," said Fremaux. "We think it's ridiculous and grotesque and really slows things down."

"You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie," he added.
