Woody Allen has become the latest big name to make a leap into the online world of streaming, with the announcement that the veteran director will be writing and directing a comedy series for Amazon Prime.

Little is known about the series at the moment, which is going under the name 'Untitled Woody Allen Project', however Amazon have already ordered it to a full season. There’s also no projected release date, but something we do know is that each episode will be half an hour.

Speaking in the press release Allen said, “I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price [VP of Amazon Studios] will regret this.”

Allen may not have any ideas yet, but Amazon have already shown tremendous faith in the director by allowing him to by pass their usual pilot process. Traditionally, Amazon Prime has allowed its Instant Video subscribers to watch pilots for potential series and vote on which ones they'd like to see as a full series.

Commenting on the deal, Amazon Studios vice president Roy Price said, “Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series.”

“From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year,” Price continued.

There’s really no better time than now for Amazon Prime to make such a high profile announcement. The streaming service just picked up two awards at Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony, Bbest Comedy Series for Transparent and Best Actor in a comedy series for its star, Jeffrey Tambor.

So it looks as if the war between the streaming services is well and truly on. Netflix, I guess its your move next.
