Review of Lazy Single by X Press 2

X-PRESS 2
X Press 2 Lazy single Feat. David Byrne and new album Muzikizum
Lazy

Single released April 8

It has been talked about in hushed tones since its completion last summer. It is the untouchable highlight of X-Press 2's DJ sets - and has been for months. It's a masterpiece. X-Press 2 present 'Lazy' - Rocky, Diesel and Ashley Beedle taking X-Press 2 centre stage. Much much more than an anthem for the clubs, 'Lazy' is a truly great pop record that delights at every step. With the legendary David Byrne on vocals, 'Lazy' is X-Press 2's first proper vocal excursion. The sound of the ante being properly raised.

Hooking up with David Byrne was just the catalyst that X-Press 2 needed. A life long ambition that didn't disappoint. Byrne had originally called up several years ago to request the Ballistic Brothers (in the belief they were a fully live band!) as the support on his European tour. Move on several years and work on X-Press 2's album had produced a track that was sounding a little like Talking Heads.

X-Press 2's engineer James Brown suggested David Byrne, Skint got on the case and the result was a transatlantic exchange of tapes and probably one of David Byrne's finest vocal performances for years.

Ashley describes David Byrne as a man "full of art and magic" and it shines through here. Byrne's distinctive vocals on 'Lazy' are a million miles away from the 'take me higher' diatribe of most house records. X-Press 2 call it 'slacker house'. Whatever it is it's genius. Driving to work or hands in the air, 'Lazy' has it covered.

Muzikizum

Album released April 22

'Lazy' is taken from X-Press 2's forthcoming debut album 'Muzikizum' (released on Skint Records, 22nd April 2002), and is the first proper single release from the boys. 'AC/DC' (Oct 2000), 'Muzikizum' (April 2001) and 'Smoke Machine' (October 2001) were vinyl only, no video and no radio promotion releases, and the last two records still graced the top 50 on release. 'Lazy' will have the full promotional push and a video shot by one time Spike Jonze's assistant Howard Shur.

'Muzikizum' is X-Press 2's debut album release and a masterclass in dancefloor dynamics. Guest vocals come from David Byrne ('Lazy'), Deiter Meier ('I Want You Back'), and Steve Edwards ('Call It Love'), and the album sets new benchmarks for house music and beyond.
