The Battlefield franchise has always been good for one thing: all out, guns blazing warfare. But after 12 titles, allowing players to step into battle in World War II, the present day and in the year 2142, the franchise is taking a more localised approach to conflict, examining the microcosm of war that is law enforcement v criminal.

Battlefield Hardline

This comes after Battlefield’s main rival, Call of Duty, released a new trailer for Advanced Warfare, which features the acting talents of Kevin Spacey, whose popular character in House of Cards enjoyed an online session to let off some steam.

The upcoming shooter will be developed by Dead Space studio Visceral and will be released this Autumn. It all began when Visceral's Steve Papoutsis and DICE CEO Karl Magnus Troedsson met. "Several years ago, I was at an internal EA meeting in Barcelona with creative leaders from across the company," Papoutsis explained.

"It was there I met Karl Magnus Troedsson, the GM of DICE, for the first time, and we immediately began talking about games. I've always loved Battlefield and KM was a huge fan of Dead Space, which I was working on at the time. We started talking about different ways we could work together, different ways we could take Battlefield and action games in a new direction. It was then that this project that became Battlefield Hardline was born."

Like most triple AAA titles of this nature, Hardline is thought to be in development for XBOX One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC, and will be fully unveiled at EA's E3 press conference on June 9 at 8pm UK time. Papoutsis added that the studio is "adding new twists and turns to the foundation of Battlefield multiplayer" and "bringing [its] strengths" to single player.
