Are they ska? Jazz? Rock? Quite frankly it's impossible to stick Yes Sir Boss into a single category; just try it with recently released debut single 'Not Guilty'. Yes Sir Boss have become the first band to sign with Joss Stone's label Stone'd Records.
Along with the single is a new EP 'Desperation State' which is now available for download, plus a surreal paper theatre type animation as the 'Not Guilty' video which does not fail to encompass the unique sound of YSB with their classical brass instrumental touch. It is no wonder that the British six piece have been recognised as one of the most vibrant new bands playing live; an assertion that lead singer Matt Sellors backs confidently. 'At our gigs, you can expect a mixture of musical influences and tight musicianship', he insists, unsurprisingly given their broad spectrum of influences.
Bassist Josh Stopford reveals how the band came to work with the Grammy winning soul singer Joss Stone who he had known as a child and remained in contact with. 'We were on our way to a gig. We were lost in the fog and I accidentally called the first 'J' in my contacts, which happened to be Joss,' he explains. As it turns out, Stone had been meaning to chat him since hearing the band's music and subsequently asked them to support her at her show in Amsterdam. 'Then, when she set up her own label it was like, I want to sign you guys because I think you're wicked', Josh recalls.
