Next up in the world of vacuous teen flicks is That Awkward Moment, a film about three middle class dudes looking to 'score some chicks' in that thorny world of dating that presents us with such impossible conundrums as 'bros vs. hoes.'

That Awkward Moment
Three Guys Make A Pact To Stay Single: What Could Go Wrong?

The movie focuses on three early-twenties guys, Jason, Daniel and Mikey, who enter into a pact to stay single together after Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) splits from his girlfriend. Predictably, Jason (Zac Efron) and Daniel (Miles Teller) meet girls and try to keep their new flings on the low whilst pretending there's nothing more than casual sex going on.

The trailer plays like a single episode advert for The Inbetweeners, leaving us wondering just how far director Tom Gormican can possibly drag the classic blend of hackneyed meet-the-parents-at-the-worst-possible-time and Viagra japes. A clichéd scene of one of the guys marching into the street only to bounce over the windscreen by a speeding car: that's how far.

Watch The 'That Awkward Moment' Trailer [Warning: Contains Language & Images Unsuitable For Children]:

The film capitalises on meme culture - even the title, That Awkward Moment, is derived from a popular internet train of thought - as well as the "lad culture" that prides itself in its objectification of women, the condemnation of emotions perceived to be feminine and its misogynistic "bro code."

Though the film finds its reality in complicated emotions and chivalry amongst friends, it plays like a cartoon of real life exemplified by a scene where Ellie (Imogen Poots) and Jason lie in bed post-coitus and she muses "I was gonna make you wait like 40 days" and he replies "I was gonna make you wait too but then I realised I'm a dude."

"What are you? Bridget Jones?" yells Daniel, snatching ice cream from the post-break up Mikey and proposing they all go out, get drunk and meet some more girls instead. The movie could have a shot at being funny, but appears to fall into well-worn tropes and idioms.

As lad culture becomes a long-gone, turn-of-the-decade embarrassment, so too will That Awkward Moment in all its carefree discrimination of women and men with feelings. With School of Rock's Scott Aversano at the production helm, the movie could be a memorable one but we wouldn't be surprised if the trailer shows every "funny" gag in its entirety.

That Awkward Moment will be released in the UK and USA on the 31st January 2014.
