Remember how yesterday we predicted that Zach Braff’s Kickstarter project would raise its $2 million by the end of the week? Well, we reckon we’re on track to victory with that little prediction. As news has spread of Braff’s intention to crowd-fund a “thematic sequel” to Garden State, so the cash keeps rolling in. In fact, there’s something mildly hypnotic about watching the numbers escalating on the Kickstarter page as Braff fans around the globe all chip in for a slice of the Wish I Was Here pie.

In his pitch for cash, to fund the movie, which he has co-written with his brother, Braff revealed that he was inspired by the success of the Veronica Mars Kickstarter. He wrote “After I saw the incredible way “Veronica Mars” fans rallied around Kristen Bell and her show’s creator Rob Thomas, I couldn’t help but think (like I'm sure so many other independent filmmakers did) maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn’t involve signing away all your artistic control.” On the Wish I Was Here profile page on the Kickstarter site, it states that they hope to raise the $2 million of necessary funds by May 24th. The fund has been open for donations since yesterday and has already raised over $1,382,000 at the time of writing.

At this rate, that ambitious feat looks as though it may well be in the bag. Braff was so overwhelmed by the response that he posted an update yesterday to say “You guys are amazing. I've been so overwhelmed by your outpouring of support I didn't get a chance to post here that I added a NY premiere and after party!!!! There are still a few spots left in my row :) We also are adding more screenings in LA, NYC, Chicago and London so I can watch the movie with as many of you as possible. We're almost halfway there!!!! All thanks to you.” Smiley faces an over-abundance of exclamation mars are a sure sign of a happy movie maker.
