Snowden Review

Excellent

Here's another remarkable biopic from Oliver Stone, who has used all-star casts and intensely pointed filmmaking to trace the lives of such people as JFK, Nixon, Jim Morrison and George W. Bush. And now he turns his attention to whistleblower Edward Snowden. This is an urgent, skilfully made film that manages to avoid preachy politics as it asks the central question: was Snowden a traitor or a patriot?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Ed, a nerdy genius who never went to university but was spotted by CIA trainer Corbin (Rhys Ifans) and brought into the fold. Rising through the ranks, he moves from Virginia to Switzerland, Japan and Hawaii, accompanied by his long-suffering girlfriend Lindsay (Shailene Woodley), who isn't allowed to know what he does for a living. Over the years, his faith in America's government is shaken as he discovers the scale of its data-gathering operation, collecting all telephone and internet information on every person on earth, whether or not they're a suspect. And he believes that the taxpayers have a right to know what their elected officials are doing.

The script tells the story as Ed describes his life to filmmaker Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo) and two Guardian journalists (Zachary Quinto and Tom Wilkinson) while hiding in a Hong Kong hotel, an event recounted in the Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour. Eventually, this element of the story generates some proper action as the CIA tracks him down and gives chase. Stone orchestrates these scenes expertly, generating some real adrenaline without sacrificing the bigger narrative. And Gordon-Levitt is simply remarkable, vanishing into the role so effectively that the final dissolve to the real Snowden is barely perceptible. His chemistry with Woodley is complex and engaging (even with a gratuitous sex scene), creating a terrific central love story to guide the audience through the events.

Snowden Trailer

Edward Snowden always knew he wanted to serve his country and, as most young men and women who feel the need to serve their country, he enrolled in the United States Army Reserves, training was tough and it took a toll on his body, an accident led to Snowden fracturing both his legs, his plans for the future were thrown into chaos and he had to evaluate a new way to serve - as well as make a living.

Turing to one of his other natural skills, Snowden continued to hone his computer skills and finally applied for a job at the CIA. Working his way up the ranks, Snowden became an intrinsic member of staff and it lead him to be offered a new job at the NSA by their deputy director. His job was to analyse the internet, to find new ways to intercept the one communication from the 'bad guy' amongst all the innocent communications each person sends on a day to day basis but what he discovers is that the NSA have access to far more knowledge and information than he or any other normal citizen would expect.

Though he's never believed in sharing state secrets, now he's privy to this information, Snowden knows he must do something with it and that he might be putting his life on the line in order to bring this enormous data privacy breach to light. Sneaking out files via a micro drive hidden in his rubik's cube, Snowden contacts three journalists Laura Poitras, Ewen MacAskill and Glenn Greenwald with his newly found knowledge and they begin to unfold the information.

Star Trek Beyond Review

Excellent

This is where the Star Trek franchise officially shifts from thoughtful drama into thunderous action. Fast & Furious director Justin Lin brings a kinetic energy to this third chapter in the rebooted space saga, leaping between chases and battles to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Combined with constant witty interaction, the film is massively entertaining, even if the plot ultimately feels a bit thin.

It's been three years since the crew of the Enterprise started their five-year mission, and they're in need of a break. So they head to the nearest spaceport for some down-time, which is soon interrupted when Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his team (Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin) are called to travel through a dangerous nebula to rescue a kidnapped crew from a villainous thug called Krall (Idris Elba). On arrival, the Enterprise is overwhelmed by Krall's bee-like military swarm. Stranded on a strange planet, the crew teams up with Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), a feisty survivor of one of Krall's earlier attacks. And as they realise the extent of Krall's evil plan, they're not sure that they can stop him.

When the Starship Enterprise finds itself under forceful attack, the crew on board fight to their best ability but it's not enough. The unstoppable wave of aliens constantly bombarding the ship means that the crew must accept defeat and flee to an unknown planet. Given the crew were deep into a five year mission, their location to the rest of the Federation is unknown and a rescue mission is going to be far from easy.

It’s not often the U.K gets its hands on a movie before the U.S, but with Star Trek Into Darkness, that’s exactly what happened. Last night’s U.S Premiere of the film brought along all the stars as America finally got their hands on this long-awaited sci-fi sequel.

J.J. Abrams and his intergalactic cohorts Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Karl Urban, Peter Weller and John Cho were all in attendance. “It was just great to walk back onto the bridge of the Enterprise and say, ‘Buckle up, here we go again,'" Lindelof told The Hollywood Reporter. “My favorite part about this film was getting to work again with the people that I love and respect and I remained friends with since the first time we all met,” the Star Trek stalwart explained, before lavishing praise on J.J Abrams, who is about to embark on a totally new sci fi adventure with Star Wars. “To get to work with a director like J.J. is very inspiring because you learn so much. It’s almost like a learning curve every single day you come to set.” Saldana, who plays Nyota Uhura in both Star Trek films, explained how "The action does not stop. The suspense challenges you as well. It’s not one of those films that the plot is so easy that you know how it’s going to go."

Zachary Quinto - Interview

Interview with Zachary Quinto

After a key role in the TV series 24, Zachary Quinto was launched into the A-list with his mesmerising turn as the villainous Sylar on Heroes, and his TV career has continued with American Horror Story. Between these series, the politically active actor-filmmaker memorably recreated the iconic role as Spock in J.J. Abram's reimagined 2009 Star Trek movie and went on to win  two Independent Spirit Awards for producing and starring in the 2012 financial drama Margin Call. Now he's back as Spock, pushing the character further in the sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.

What's the biggest challenge about taking on such a legendary TV and film character?
There's a general challenge for me playing Spock, who is often erroneously assumed to have no emotion. So to cultivate an inner life and to convey actually the fact that there is quite a deep well of emotion in this character is a consistent challenge. But honestly, if you're talking about the biggest challenge of playing Spock, I would say shaving my eyebrows takes the cake!

How did you react when you first landed the role in Star Trek?
Firstly, I reached out to a friend of mine, a good friend from college who has been to no less than 50 Star Trek conventions. And I asked him to compile for me a booklet of information on the history of Vulcan and the life of Spock and the family tree. And we began to enter into a session of tutorials, which lasted only until the time when it was announced that I was going to play Spock, which was maybe another month and a half or two months later. And that's the first time that I met Leonard Nimoy. So I fired my first tutor and went with the second! Leonard Nimoy usurped that position. He has subsequently become someone who's enormously important in my life, both personally and creatively.

It’s Spock V Spock - Leonard Nimoy V Zachary Quinto In Audi Advert

Zachary Quinto

Audi know their advertising. Volkswagen went there with Star Wars, butchering the franchise with their attempt (who hasn’t). And now Audi take their turn to either delight or enrage the geek population with their Star Trek inspired campaign.

The ad is pretty good; it pits Leonard Nimoy against Zachary Quinto (classic Spock v new-age Spock) as they attempt to beat each other at the banalities of domestic life. Rich domestic life, that is, as they finish their chess battle only to see who can arrive at the gold course first. Of course, Quinto’s Audi does the trick, with its ample boot space and space-age sat nav system. Nimoy’s stuffy old (it’s brand new) Mercedes is just no good for DRIVING TO A GOLF COURSE. Sure, it’s ridiculous, but it doesn’t matter; it’s Spock v Spock - Half-Vulcan Half-Human v Half-Vulcan Half-Human. The highly anticipated Star Trek Into The Darkness is due for release on May 17th, and is helmed by J.J Abrams.

The Coy JJ Abrams: "Things Become Less Secretive Online"

Jj Abrams Benedict Cumberbatch Chris Pine Zachary Quinto

Jj Abrams - the writer and producer behind the forthcoming Star Trek movie - has discussed the secrecy behind his various projects and explained while he refuses to offer fans bonus footage before release dates. The creator of Lost is known for keeping the details of his projects under wraps, though insists it's for the viewer's overall benefit.

"I will sit in a meeting before a movie with 80-some people, heads of departments, and literally say that all I ask is that we preserve the experience for the viewer," Abrams told Entertainment Weekly, "Every choice we make, every costume fitting, every pad of makeup, every set that's built - all that stuff becomes less magical if it's discussed and revealed and pictures are posted online. I just want to make sure that when somebody sees something in a movie they didn't watch a 60-minute behind-the-scene [video] that came out two months before." The hype for Star Trek Into Darkness is beginning to reach fever pitch, with both Abrams and several of his cast-members getting hacked-off with the clamour to discover who Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing. Fans and reporters have suggested the British star will portray legendary villain Khan, though pretty much everyone involved with the project has denied this. Abrams hinted at the speculation, saying, "It's only fun to keep things quiet when it finally comes out as scheduled, because then you feel like, 'Oh I didn't just spend six months ruining the movie for people. It's not fun during the experience of withholding. Because then you sound like a coy bastard . and you're sort of being a jerk."

Star Trek Into Darkness - also starring Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine - hits cinemas in the U.S. and UK on May 17, 2012.

Star Trek Into Darkness - Teaser Trailer

Captain Kirk and his formidable Enterprise crew are back and this time danger is closer than they think. On returning to their home planet, they discover that a ruthless force integrated among them has caused massive destruction among the Starfleet and left their planet in total disaster. Kirk and the crew must band together for a life threatening mission that could destroy them all as they set out in a war against this terrible threat. But this time, lives are not the only thing at stake; friendships will be tested, hearts will be broken and Kirk must make sacrifices against his Enterprise family in order to finally settle the score with an old foe.

'Star Trek Into Darkness' becomes the twelfth 'Star Trek' movie since the sci-fi series released the first one, entitled 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture', in 1979. It serves as the sequel to the simply named 2009 film 'Star Trek' and has been directed by the same person J.J. Abrams ('Super 8') with writing credits from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman ('The Legend of Zorro', 'Transformers', 'Cowboys & Aliens') and Damon Lindelof ('Prometheus'). It will finally hit screens after much anticipation on May 17th 2013 in the UK.

Starring: Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Peter Weller, John Cho, Nazneen Contractor, Bruce Greenwood, Heather Langenkamp, Nolan North,

Forget The Hobbit, Star Trek Into Darkness To Preview Before Lord Of The Rings

Peter Jackson Chris Pine Zachary Quinto

Fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise will get an extra special treat should they head to their nearest IMAX 3-D cinemas to watch The Hobbit this festive season. Paramount Pictures has announced it will release the first nine minutes of J.J Abrams new Star Trek movie Into Darkness immediately before Jackson's new epic.

Nine minutes is a considerable sneak peek of a movie not set for release until May 2013. It also represents the first time that exclusive footage has played on IMAX 3-D screens. "Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park," said Imax Filmed Entertainment president Greg Foster in a statement on The Hollywood Reporter, "The footage is absolutely incredible." Abrams new movie welcomes back Chris Pine as a young Captain Kirk while Zachary Quinto plays Mr Spock, as he did in the 2009 original. Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch will star as the villain, though the specifics of his role have been kept safely under wraps. The British actor has remained coy on the issue, though did tell Shortlist, "I'll tell you this - it's iconic and it's exciting. I'm bored of denying that it's Khan now, because people keep saying it. It's a great part and it's really well written. I enjoyed the fights and the stunts, there's lots of that and it really is properaction movie territory."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits cinemas in the U.S. on December 14, 2012. Star Trek Into Darkness hits on May 17, 2013.

New Captain Kirk Talks

Chris Pine Captain Entertainment Weekly John Cho Karl Urban Lord Of The Rings Simon Pegg Star Trek Take That William Shatner Zachary Quinto

Chris Pine, the actor set to play Captain Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek film, has talked of the pressures of taking on the iconic role.

Smokin' Aces star Pine is to step into the shoes of William Shatner in the JJ Abrams picture which tells of the adventures of the Starship Enterprise during their time at Star Fleet academy.

Though he confirmed he would reveal "not a thing" during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 27-year-old did let slip some small details about the movie, set for a Boxing Day release.

"I think the biggest mistake I could ever do would be to try to recreate what Mr Shatner did," he explained. "There are certain qualities that Kirk has that are vital for someone who is a leader of men.

"And those qualities, I definitely wanted to take from what Mr Shatner did in the original series. But my job is to take something new, to Take That and build upon it, really do my own thing. I just feel no pressure when it comes to that."

The young actor admitted he can understand the fears of hardcore fans but attempt to allay some of their concerns.

"I don't have that many credits and people are very worried that their Kirk is going to be destroyed. But I can only say that we're having a great time. JJ has been wonderful and the cast is phenomenal. I think what we're doing is very special."

Pine said he had not met Shatner, but added: "I've met Mr Nimoy a couple of times. He's been on set and we have a couple of scenes in the film, which will be nice, and I'm excited for those."

Though Heroes star Zachary Quinto is to play the young Vulcan, Pine's comments could imply that time travel is featured in the movie or that flashbacks will be used.

After a call for 'odd-looking' extras, much of the movie's major casting has been completed.

British comedy favourite Simon Pegg will play the young Scotty, Lord Of The Rings actor Karl Urban stars as Leonard 'Bones' McCoy and comic actor John Cho plays Mr Sulu.
