Justice League Teaser Trailer

In the wake of his friend Clark Kent's monumental sacrifice, Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince are determined to recruit the most powerful superheroes on the planet to help them fight a new menace that Lex Luthor predicted was coming to the Earth. They are the intrepid Arthur Curry or Aquaman, king of the sea; the young but lightning-fast Barry Allen, also known as The Flash; and the half-man half-machine known as Victor Stone or Cyborg. Together they must fight an army of parademons that have descended upon them, apparently in search of the Mother Box that transformed Victor Stone into the biomechanical creature he is. They are serving the villainous extra-terrestrial Steppenwolf, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants and take over the world. But as you can probably work out, these heroes have an advantage in that Superman is far from dead as they initially suspected.

Justice League - Comic Con Trailer

Bruce Wayne knows that the Earth is under threat from evil forces much worse than any he's - or any other superhero - has previously seen. To defend the people of Earth, Bruce and Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) decide to hunt down some of the most skilled individuals the planet has to offer, each of these people have a special talent and could play a vital part in saving the world.

As well as the new recruits (who include Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash) Batman also recruits Wonder Woman who previously fought alongside Superman whilst trying to beat Lex Luthor's incredibly strong genetically-engineered creature which also killed Superman. The fate of Superman is unclear but given the end of Batman Vs. Superman it's presumed that Superman will return to life albeit potentially temporarily weakened.

The Justice League is DC Comics’ superhero team and it’s thought that a supervillain called Steppenwolf will be their main target – though it’s sure that Lex Luthor will appear and cause as much trouble as he possibly can.

Zack Snyder Details The Inner Battles Consuming Batman And Superman

Zack Snyder

'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' director Zack Snyder opens up about the inner turmoils going on in the minds of both Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent that lead them to ultimately clash following events in 2013's 'Man Of Steel'. Guilt, tragedy and frustration both unite these heroes and divide them.

Batman v SupermanBatman v Superman - They've both got problems of their own

After the destructive battle with General Zod at the end of 'Man Of Steel', Superman is now suffering the repercussions of defeating his enemy. Too many innocent lives has been lost in his quest to save who he could, and now he's questioning how much of it was worth it.

'Batman V Superman' May Have Smashed The Box Office, But It Hasn't Convinced Critics

Zack Snyder Ben Affleck Henry Cavill Gal Gadot

Probably the most highly anticipated film of the year, 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' predictably stormed the box office with $170.1 million domestic ticket sales and $424.1m global. That's easily superseding critically acclaimed hits like 'Zootopia' and '10 Cloverfield Lane', and yet it continues to be viciously attacked by critics.

Batman v SupermanIt's Batman VS. Superman VS. the critics

As it stands, 'Batman v Superman' starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill is at just 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, actually dropping from 29% in just a day. Both would-be fans and film reviewers were left feeling more than a little disappointed at the distinct lack of any humour, the controversial ending and a lot of over-the-top production. Our own critics, Rich Cline, explained that the main issue lay in the theatrics. 'The problem is that the film is so big and loud that it can't help but feel bloated, especially since so much of what's on screen feels rather vacuous', he said.

Before 'Batman V Superman', Wonder Woman's Difficult Journey To The Big Screen

Both Batman and Superman have seen various incarnations on the big screen, but in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice they will be joined by a superhero whose film debut is long overdue, Wonder Woman. The story of Wonder Woman’s journey to the big screen could be a movie in itself, as until now writers, directors and studios have tried and failed to make the heroine leap from comic books to film.

Wonder Woman’s live-action debut came in a 1974 TV movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby, but she wasn’t quite as comic book fans had expected. This Wonder Woman was blonde and had a very questionable costume, which featured some blue leggings and a red coat with blue and white starred sleeves.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Trailer

Every superhero has a dark side and being 100% human, Batman is in doubt over how genuine Superman actually is. After all, Superman is from a different planet and has incredibly natural powers; powers that could easily destroy our world.

As Lex Luther manipulates Batman and Superman into a deeper and deeper war, the duo find that they are pitted against a force that's much more of a present threat than either of the heroes. They are joined by a number of other heroes (including Wonder Woman and The Flash) on a quest to save earth from immediate danger.

Warner Bros. Pictures releases Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice in cinemas 25 March 2016.

Next year is taking comic books to a new level. No longer are the lines between heroes and villains solid. Now we're seeing a new side to our favourite caped crusaders; Marvel's Captain America may be bringing about a civil war, but that's nothing compared to the battle between DC's Batman and Superman in 'Dawn Of Justice'.

Henry Cavill in Batman vs SupermanHenry Cavill reprises his role as Clark Kent

The new trailer sees an evermore intensifying hostility between the two vigilantes: on the one side you've got a billionaire human being named Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) who's disillusioned with what Gotham City has become and determined to fight crime in his own way, and on the other you've got an alien journalist named Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) with supernatural powers who's rather more modest when it comes to his own crime-fighting practices.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - Official Trailer

What happens when two superheroes with vastly differing opinions come head to head? Well, not very well if Lex Luthor has anything to do with it. Superman believes Batman is a vigilante and the civil liberties of the people of Gotham are 'being trampled on' whilst Batman feels Superman's abilities are blown out of proportion by the media and is far from a fan of his superhero outfit.

Lex Luthor has enough power to manipulate this situation to his benefit and pitches both heroes against one another - Son of Krypton versus Bat of Gotham however, when his plan doesn't go exactly to plan he creates a monster to destroy both men - on the verge of destruction, Batman and Superman are joined by Wonder Woman, Aquaman and other superheroes on their quest to save their city from destruction.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is directed by Zack Snyder and it's a precursor to The Justice League films - which are also written and directed by Snyder.

Cannes Panning: We'd love to say we were starting the round-up on a high with the Cannes Film Festival but unfortunately for new royal biopic Grace of Monaco, there is no good news to be found. The Nicole Kidman-starring true story dramatization has been almost universally crushed by Cannes critics who found the acting wooden, the script trite and the entire picture worse than the much-slated Diana pic. You can watch the trailer here though - it's worth it for the beautiful costumes and idyllic tax-haven setting.

Baldwin Busted: Alec Baldwin should probably sneak off to some meditation resort in the mountains for the next few months until this latest debacle blows over. The hot-headed actor and TV host, who is known for his many altercations with paps, had a run-in with police this week when he was caught riding his bicycle the wrong way down a busy New York street and flew into a rage when the cops asked to see his ID. It didn't end well for the 30 Rock star: read about all the drama here.

Can Zack Snyder Really Do Justice To 'The Justice League'?

Zack Snyder

It’s no big surprise that Zack Snyder has been announced as the man who will direct the upcoming Justice League movie. Snyder, who directed last year's Man of Steel and is currently working on the 'as yet untitled' Batman vs Superman movie seems to be Warner Bros chosen one when it comes to bringing the DC universe to life. But continuity aside, is Zack Snyder really the right man for the job?

Zack SnyderZack Snyder will be taking on the Justice League

Snyder made his name in Hollywood when he debuted behind the lens on 2004’s Dawn of the Dead remake. Critically, the movie earned unexpected praise and at the box office it became one of the few zombie films to make over $102 million internationally. His follow up, 300, became an even bigger box office hit taking over $456 million worldwide. But this time many critics weren’t too keen on Snyder’s violent vision and 300 earned its fair share of rotten reviews. Two years later The Watchmen would find itself in a similar situation as Snyder began to seem in danger of becoming one of those directors who polarises opinion yet draws big box office. But when his writing debut Sucker Punch hit theatres in 2011 both critics and audiences stayed away, with the movie drawing particular criticism for its depiction of female characters.

'300: Rise Of An Empire' Trumps Box Office Competition, But Falls Behind Original

Zack Snyder Eva Green

Meet your new box office champion – Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise of an Empire. Considering everything, the odds were pretty much stacked against Rise, what with its March release and the seven-year gap between Rise and the original. But in the absence of any real competition, the CGI-fueled action flick easily rose (get it?) to the top of the box office. It’s $46 million opening weekend was on point with predictions.

300: Rise of an Empire Still
Rise is just as bloody, but maybe not quite as profitable, as the original.

According to Forbes, $6.8m of those profits came from its 343 IMAX locations (it’s their second-biggest R-rated debut). Rise of an Empire doesn’t even come close to matching its predecessor’s debut from 2007. Back then, the original 300 made $70.9 million on opening weekend, even without the additional IMAX charge. But then, few franchises ever match the success of the first movie. A successful trilogy is pretty much the Holy Grail of the film industry – things like Men in Black ($51, $52 and $54 million opening weekends) and the Matrix trilogy come to mind.

Critics Peg "300: Rise Of An Empire" As One Big Bloody Mess. Literally.

Today is the day. After months of eye-popping, but low on story trailers, Noam Muro’s 300: Rise of an Empire hits theaters today. It was written by Zack Snyder, so regardless of which side of the Snyder divide moviegoers stand on, it’s fairly obvious what to expect from this film. Even so, early reviews are controversial at best.

300: Rise of an Empire Still
300: Rise of an Empire is little more than stylish, say critics.

Here’s the quick rundown. As much as some critics have loved the stylish, gory look of Rise,  in terms of substance it mostly fails to impress. The LA Times’ Betsy Sharkey puts it thusly: “As much performance art as movie, 300: Rise of an Empire unfolds as beautiful, bloody, slow-motion machismo.” While it lacks some of the freshness of the 2006 original, she writes, Rise’s impact is helped by “passionate music perfectly underscoring this latest round of the "beautiful death" the ancient Greeks were so poetic about.”

Ever since Zack Snyder announced a Superman/Batman film in the works at last weekend's Comic-Con, the internet has exploded with rumors; few of which have been about the movie and more about who should replace Christian Bale as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel.

Ryan Gosling's was a name that surfaced quickly and it's easy to see why: Gosling has great stage presence and, as we saw in Drive, the ability to flip from calm to guns blazing in mere seconds. What Culture say that the 32 year-old "perfectly fits this more brutal and tortured Batman, not to mention that he possesses the suave playboy looks to serve as the cover story." So it's a shame really that it's not going to be Ryan.

Zack Snyder announced at last weekend's Comic-Con that the Man of Steel sequel would also include Batman as DC Comics edged closer to its Avengers equivalent: the Justice League of America. Stunned fans were treated to a reading from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns comic book - in which Batman and Superman clash - followed by a projected teaser image that combined the superheroes' logos. Shortly afterwards, writer David S. Goyer revealed that the production team were mulling over names such as Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman after a similarly titled project failed to get the green light back in 2002, Yahoo! News reports. However, the focus has shifted to who would replace the gravel-voiced Christian Bale as Batman.

Warner Bros. and Snyder are looking at somebody to play the new Batman with a reputation similar to Cavill's, when Cavill was testing for Superman. It's also said that better known actors could also be testing for the role. As filming is expected to begin in early 2014, screen tests should be happening soon."

In the DC comic universe, the two have teamed up on more than one occasion, beginning with a slew of friendly team-ups in the 1950's to the 70's, before Frank Miller's The Dark Knight comics changed the complexion of their relationship to an antagonistic one where the two heroes barely see eye-to-eye on anything. The big screen hook-up will probably take the latter route.

Superman And Batman Set To Team Up In 2015 'Man Of Steel' Sequel

Henry Cavill Zack Snyder Christian Bale Superman Batman Frank Miller

Warner Bros. announced, during their Comic-Con panel appearance, that Henry Cavill would be reprising his role as Superman. However Batman will also be dropping in to lend a helping hand. It will be the first time the caped heroes have appeared together on the big screen.

Many comic-book fans have welcomed the announced as it is a step towards such DC 'Avengers-like' teams as the Justice League. Marvel's superheroes are considerable more integrated with references to the various Avengers in their individual films. A Justice League movie was rumoured to be in production earlier this year, following the success of Superman: Man of Steel, however Cavill confirmed no such film had been mentioned to him. Should the Justice League movie be shot, it would feature a team of superheroes including Superman, Batman, The Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

Dark Night Of Steel? Warner Bros. Explodes Comic Book Nerds' Universe With The Announcement Of A Superman/Batman Collaboration

Henry Cavill Zack Snyder

We recommend you take a breath before reading the following – Batman and Superman will team up in a 2015 movie, directed by Zack Snyder. The long-standing rumor about an upcoming Justice League franchise from Warner Bros. is finally coming to life, with Flash and Justice League films possibly in the works for 2016 and 2017, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The studio confirmed the news during a lengthy, two-and-a-half hour panel in Hall H this Saturday. To be fair, the panel also contained announcements about a number of upcoming projects, including a live action World of Warcraft movie, Godzilla, 300: Rise of an Empire and a freaking Lego movie – all prospects thoroughly exciting for geeks the world over.

Zack Snyder, Man of Steel Premiere
Warner Bros. is once again betting on Snyder for its franchise plans.

We’re still willing to eat our hats, if anyone paid any attention to a word mentioned after the Batman/Superman announcement though. The movie is clearly a response to the success of Marvel’s Avengers and an obvious step towards a full-fledged Justice League film. Unlike Marvel however, Warner Bros. have apparently decided to take an additional step to raise expectations and fan excitement for the big one - a collaboration between two heroes, before unleashing the mayhem that is Justice League on the world. After all, while Man of Steel was a considerable success, it didn’t even come close to the earnings of Iron Man 3, released earlier in the summer. As far as excitement goes, a cross-over between the two most famous superheroes on the planet should probably do it.

Summer Blockbuster Season Is Open, As Monsters And Zombies Dominate The Weekend Box Office

John Goodman Billy Crystal Brad Pitt Zack Snyder Henry Cavill Seth Rogen

It’s been a tense weekend at the box office, with contenders for a summer blockbuster out in full force. Unsurprisingly, the top spot over the weekend went to Monsters University with estimated $82 million earnings (all data courtesy of Hollywood.com), proving that even when the critics disagree, the folks over at the Emeryville studio know what they’re doing. For those keeping score at home, Pixar’s perfect streak of 14 out of 14 films debuting at number one on their first weekend remains unbroken.

Zombies came second to monsters, as Brad Pitt’s crack at the contagion genre, World War Z, followed closely with $66 million; having debuted this weekend at 3607 theatres across the US. The film was based on the eponymous Max Brooks novel and helmed by Marc Foster. It’s no secret that the zombie genre is having its Renaissance in recent years and the Pitt production apparently manages to tap into the Zeitgeist. It turns out to be Brad Pitt’s best opening weekend, followed by Mr. and Mrs. Smith with $50.3 million.

The second runner-up again comes as no surprise, as Warner Bros’s Man of Steel continues to perform, despite the second weekend drop of 65%. With estimated weekend earnings of $41,2 million, Man of Steel is still going strong. Note: it isn’t matching the box office success of this year’s Iron Man 3 though, which, if reports of Warner Bros. modeling a Justice League franchise after The Avengers are true, would be the studio’s goal.

Box Office: Man Of Steel Turns Into Golden Hen For Warner Bros.

Henry Cavill Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder may just be Warner Bros. golden boy, what with his Man of Steel currently being projected to earn 345.6 million worldwide by the end of the weekend (figures courtesy of Deadline.) The dark retelling of Superman’s story earned an impressive $19 million on Friday. Up until that point, the flick had made a cool 135.6 million over the nine days since its release, adding up to... one happy production company. Read what our own Rich Cline has to say about the film itself.

Looks like the folks at Warner Bros. have stumbled onto a particularly successful strategy – or borrowed one from Marvel, anyway. Rumors have been swirling for the past couple of weeks that Man of Steel is just the first step towards a film reunion of DC Comics’ Justice League superheroes – much like the phenomenally successful Avengers franchise. Of course, while it is no doubt a massive earner, Man of Steel isn’t quite catching up to the record takings of Iron Man 3 a few weeks prior. Just a few days ago, Iron Man crossed the $400 million mark domestically and has to date raked in over $1.2 billion domestically.

What’s The Final Word On Superman ‘Man Of Steel’?

Henry Cavill Russell Crowe Diane Lane Michael Shannon Zack Snyder

Today, Friday 14 June 2013, marks the day when the world falls back in love with Superman as the Man of Steel flies into cinemas across the globe as the man in the bright red underpants has been reinvented for the big screen once again and this time we might have a reboot worthy of rivalling the 1970’s movie series. At least, that’s what the movie execs behind the film are hoping for, however the expectations of movie producers is rarely met by audiences and critics and with Man of Steel, we may have another case of a rather disappointing foray into film by the planet Krypton’s most famous son.

On the whole, the critical response to the film has been mostly lukewarm, and only on occasion has a critics staunchly defended the film and said that it is the summer blockbuster we’ve all been waiting for (since The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises at least). After a week of critical response to the film, it currently holds the rather underwhelming 58% on critic aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, however the film does have a much more appealing 82% approval rate from audience, with a number of people commending the film for being a successful enough spectacle to make the occasional detours into generic blockbuster territory barely discernible. With such a stark contrast between the two percentages, it might leave a few people scratching their heads and wondering whether it will be worth seeing or not, but the only real way to see who has the better opinion of the film would be to go see it yourself.

The overall criticism with the film, it seems, is that the overall spectacle that Zack Snyder has created is too erratic and all-over-the-place, rarely giving the story or development of the characters room to breath. But still, it is a spectacle and one that is still highly entertaining to watch, even if it is pretty hard to follow (think of a smarter version of Transformers).  David Sexton’s review for the London Evening Standard seems to summarize the film pretty competently, saying; “some films make you wish you were 12 again so you could appreciate them as they deserve.”

Man Of Steel Reviews - What Are The Critics Saying?

Henry Cavill Zack Snyder

A 35 year-old graphic novel myth given the CGI reboot on the big screen, the hotly anticipated Man of Steel hits screens this Friday in a long-awaited reinstatement that aims to better Bryan Singer's 2006 chancy incarnation, Superman Returns.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film will, of course, follow Clark Kent - journalist and alien offspring from Krypton trying to find his place in our world - played by Henry Cavill (Stardust, Immortals) as he goes through the old tale of self-discovery, realising he has special powers but trying to live a normal life working at The Daily Planet, where he encounters Lois Lane (Amy Adams: The Fighter, Sunshine Cleaning).

Cue rebellious villain, General Zod, played by Michael Shannon (Take Shelter, Boardwalk Empire) who plays the Kryptonian general with fire and conviction.

Zack Snyder Star Wars Rumors Denied By Director

Zack Snyder

The Star Wars rumor mill churns on, and this time it’s Zack Snyder who has had to come out and deny that he’s having anything to do with the Disney re-boot of the George Lucas-created science fiction franchise.

As has already been confirmed, the new trilogy of Star Wars films is being written by Michael Arndt, with the likes of J.J. Abrams, Jon Favreau and Matthew Vaughan all being reported at various points to be linked to directing. There’s still no clear answer though, and Snyder is the latest to have shot down reports. A statement given to The Hollywood Reporter by a rep said "While he is super-flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia.

Disney have big plans for their $4 billion pound investment, with hopes being that a number of stories and one-offs could spin off from the new trilogy; Lawrence Kasdan, writer of The Empire Strikes Back, and Simon Kinberg, who can list X-Men: First Class on his own credits, are said to be writing ideas for these. But as for a director for the main draw? At the moment it would seem that the movie industry’s guess is as good as ours.

Clark Kent is a young reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper. He was adopted when he was a child after planetary disaster caused him to be sent down to Earth when his home planet Krypton was destroyed. His adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, brought him up in the rural town of Smallville in Kansas. Throughout his life, his super-abilities isolated him from the rest of the population; he had to make a choice about what kind of man he wanted to become equipped with these powers. Naturally, he transforms himself into the Superman, a new found alter-ego, and uses his astonishing faculties to defend the planet when it comes under attack from an evil force that could prove to be a match for his abilities.

'Man of Steel' is the epic DC comic book movie rebooting the original 'Superman' film series from the 80s. It was directed by the award-winning Zack Snyder ('300', 'Watchmen', 'Sucker Punch') and produced by his wife Deborah Snyder (who co-produced many of his movies) alongside 'The Dark Knight' trilogy producers Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Charles Roven. Based upon characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in DC Comics and written by David S. Goyer, 'Man of Steel' was filmed mainly in Plano, Illinois with Chicago and Vancouver as backdrops. It is set for UK release on June 14th 2013.

300 Review

Excellent
Everything old is new again in 300, director Zack Snyder's account of the barbaric Battle of Thermopylae, a film that is ridiculously stylish and commendably substantive. I expected the former (Snyder's source material is a graphic novel from cult hero Frank Miller) and was delighted by the latter, as 300 winds up being far more original than I thought possible.

Like Robert Rodriguez in Sin City, Snyder employs cutting-edge visual technology and green-screen effects to essentially photocopy Miller's acclaimed work of the same name. Because Miller's graphic novels have been fountains of inspiration for a handful of recent directors, his style has become overly identifiable. Splotches of crimson (usually blood) stain sun-dried backdrops as impossibly chiseled warriors fight long past their dying breath. That's 300 in a nutshell, though Snyder's tight epic additionally bathes in every tired cliché of the warrior genre, yet somehow makes it all seem fresh.
