Niall Horan and his former One Direction bandmate Zayn Malik shared an awkward handshake at last night’s American Music Awards, which, luckily for us, was caught on camera.

In a video shared on Twitter, Niall is seen coyly approaching Zayn as he walks past him in the audience.

Zayn seemed a little caught off guard by his old friend, and barely looks up as Niall extends his hand. The interaction lasted just seconds before Niall quickly moved on.

Earlier in the evening Niall had told Entertainment Tonight he was looking forward to seeing Zayn again.

"I haven't spoken to [Zayn] in a few months or whatever, and haven't seen him in a while, so I'm looking forward to seeing him," he said.

Zayn’s former bandmates also weren't far from his mind during the ceremony, as he took the opportunity to throw a little shade when he collected the New Artist of the Year award.

The 23-year-old began his acceptance speech by asking: “This just has my name on it, right?”

He also failed to mention his girlfriend Gigi Hadid during his thank yous, despite the model being the ceremony’s host.

"I can't thank the people that have been with me every day the past year enough. Standing here is crazy. My mom, my dad, everybody in my family that's been supporting me the past year, especially my dad,” he said.

“Thank you, Dad. Also, big thank you to you guys. I didn't expect anybody to still vote for me. So thank you, and I'll put it on my fireplace."
