Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson and the gang will return for a fifth season of Fox's successful 'New Girl' in 2015-2016.
Fox’s successful comedy ‘New Girl’ has been given the green light for a fifth season, the network announced on Tuesday.
The renewal was reported by the LA Times, and the news means that the Zooey Deschanel-fronted comedy will register its one hundredth episode during the fifth series’ transmission run.
Fox's 'New Girl' has been extended for a fifth season run, due for 2015-16
Despite not maintaining the tremendous ratings it received when it first started, Fox clearly regards it as one of its key assets in terms of prime time broadcasting and, along with fellow comedy ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ by Andy Samberg, is one of the biggest shows it’s had in the recent past.
More: Damon Wayans Jr. set to leave ‘New Girl’ after season 4
In a statement, Fox Entertainment President David Madden said: “Four seasons in, 'New Girl' continues to be one of the smartest and most relatable comedies on television. The writing is razor-sharp, the ensemble is consistently hilarious, and we couldn’t be more proud of… …the entire 'New Girl' team. We absolutely love this show and we’re so excited to bring it back for season Five.”
Production on season four has just wound up, and the plan is apparently to immediately begin work on the new season before Deschanel’s maternity leave begins. Her pregnancy was announced back in January, but the show does not plan to incorporate this into its plotlines.
However, the show recently announced the departure of one of its founding cast members. Damon Wayans Jr., who plays the sports-obsessed character Coach, will be leaving at the end of the current fourths season.
‘New Girl’ resumes tonight (Tuesday March 31st) having run repeats for the last three weeks. It is the latest show to be renewed by the network, along with the aforementioned ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ and dramas ‘Sleepy Hollow’, ‘Gotham’ and ‘Empire’.
