This is not a joke. 2000s pop trio Atomic Kitten have genuinely remixed their number one song ‘Whole Again’ with a football theme entitled ‘Southgate You're the One (Football's Coming Home Again)’. The title is essentially the only set of lyrics in the song that have been adapted in honour of UEFA EURO 2020.
Jenny Frost returned to the girl group for the single release, joining Natasha Hamilton and Liz McClarnon who are the only two of the three who performed on the original 2001 single, with Frost having taken Kerry Katona’s place shortly after the release of ‘Whole Again’. They even performed a live version of the track at a screening of England’s game against Ukraine in Croydon on July 3rd.
Yes, it is literally as cheesy as it sounds, but football is timeless and nothing is out of bounds when England triumphs against Denmark in a stunning semi-final. It’s also not the first time we’ve heard the lyrics; in the 2018 World Cup, England fans chanted “Southgate, you’re the one / You still turn me on / Football’s coming home again” from the stands. No wonder football fans are so thrilled for the official recording release.
“It’s been a whirlwind couple of days, but we are super excited and grateful to be able to contribute to the awesome energy and patriotism that is filling the England streets with this version of ‘Whole Again’”, Atomic Kitten said in a statement.
