Bob Dylan's Taste In Music Is Not As Predictable As You Might Have Thought

Bob Dylan Amy Winehouse

Bob Dylan is due to drop his 38th studio album 'Triplicate' next week and in anticipation for the release, he has opened up in a rare interview about some of his favourite artists. He's the world's first musician to win a Nobel Prize for literature, but we bet you can't guess what he's listening to at the moment.

Bob Dylan says he likes StereophonicsBob Dylan says he likes Stereophonics

As well as all the obvious choices like Joan Baez, Link Wray and Frank Sinatra, the 'Like A Rolling Stone' singer's taste extends to a broader category of modern artists like The Stereophonics. Yep, we didn't see that one coming either.

Bob Dylan - The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert Album Review

After half a century Columbia is setting the record straight. Fans mistakenly circulated Bob Dylan's 1966 Manchester Free Trade Hall show for many years as the final date on his European tour from that year. Though the bootleggers may have been wrong and a subsequent official release of that show perpetuated the myth with a tongue-in-cheek title, it's never been disputed that these shows were a pivotal moment in Rock history. This release presents a true recording from the last venue Dylan performed at in the UK in 1966. For those looking for something revelatory, it's unlikely you'll find it here though.

Bob Dylan - The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert Album Review

That's not to say that this isn't an important historical document. It's also a great performance boasting excellent sound quality, but I can't pretend it's more incendiary than the Manchester show, which was previously presented as part of Dylan's official Bootleg series. This is the latest milestone in Columbia's copyright extension project, ensuring that all of their unreleased Dylan gems will continue to turn a profit now that they have finally seen the light of day. It's a cynical view, but is certainly a consideration when in tandem with this release you note the 36 CD box of every unreleased show from 1966 that's also emerged from the vaults. This standalone double disc set is a good summation of that mammoth set, but it also certainly has its problems.

The positives to be taken from this performance are mainly to do with the mood in the room. Yes, there's a smattering of heckling when Bob plugs in and The Hawks let rip, but Dylan sounds road-weary when he acknowledges his critics. There's also no fiery 'Judas' moment where Bob's frustration with the audience had previously over into a thundering electric performance. It's clear that by this point he'd recognised he was never going to win over the minority of Folkies that felt that he'd betrayed them. So while it's a real positive to listen to a 1966 show without the booing dominating proceedings, there's also a feeling that this is a little more perfunctory as a performance.

Newport Folk Festival To Mark 50 Years Since Bob Dylan "Went Electric"

Bob Dylan

It was a three song set that helped the change the course of pop music history: Bob Dylan ‘going electric’ at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Exactly fifty years after the event, the festival’s organisers are to mark the event at the 2015 edition with an event billed as ‘’65 Revisited’.

According to The Guardian, the festival’s producer Jay Sweet is to unveil an “all-star line up” of roughly a dozen contemporary artists who will come together to celebrate the infamous moment. However, he is adamant that the festival won’t try to re-create it in any way, like getting Dylan back to replicate the set.

Various Artists - Magic Bus: 3CDs Of Huge Hits From The Hippie Trail Album Review

Well, it does exactly what it says on the box. The 57 tracks on this 'Magic Bus' compilation run from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, but, with remarkable perspicacity, the compiler has mixed them up very cleverly.

Magic Bus: 3CDs Of Huge Hits From The Hippie Trail Album Review

The CDs are called 'Turn On', 'Tune In' and 'Drop Out' and the songs on each one reflect, more or less, their monikers. Thus, on CD1 Scott McKenzie rubs shoulders with Barry McGuire, CD2 is full of singer-songwriters; Dylan, Cat Stevens and the like; whilst CD3 rocks it up with STEPPENWOLF and Cream.

What this collection is selling is nostalgia and it does it very, very well. Anyone who grew up through the years in question will remember every one of these songs and probably sing along with them too. It has to be said that there are two major omissions though, there is nothing by either The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. Down to licensing presumably. That said, this is an absolutely classic collection that has been selected with extreme care and, dare it be said, love.

Bob Dylan Says Billionaires Should Solve Unemployment

Bob Dylan Frank Sinatra

Bob Dylan has put forward a solution for unemployment in America – let the billionaires sort it out. In an interview with AARP magazine, the discussion turned to the state of the nation’s job market and the prospects for the future.

“The government's not going to create jobs," he said. "It doesn't have to. People have to create jobs, and these big billionaires are the ones who can do it.” The current situation, in his view, is so bad in some inner city areas that there’s an inevitability of people “turning to alcohol and drugs.”

Five Swedish Scientists Have Been Hiding Bob Dylan Lyrics In Articles For 17 Years!

Bob Dylan

Five Swedish scientists with a penchant for Bob Dylan, have been amusing themselves for 17 years by inserting the famous wordsmith's lyrics into their work, all in order to win a free lunch.

Bob DylanBob Dylan, inspiring Swedish scientists

The fun began in 1997 when Jon Lundberg and Eddie Weitzberg published a paper on flatulence (of all things) entitled ‘Nitric Oxide and Inflammation: The Answer Is Blowing In the Wind’. Several years later the duo then discovered that two of their colleagues, Jonas Frisén and Konstantinos Meletis, had also used a Dylan’s reference in the title of their 2003 paper about the ability of non-neural cells to generate neurons called, ‘Blood on the Tracks: A Simple Twist of Fate?’.

Various Artists - Bob Dylan In The Eighties: Volume One Album Review

Producers Jesse Lauter and Sean O'Brien's pet project for ATO Records, 'Bob Dylan In The Eighties: Volume One', is a curious proposition. A cut above the usual covers compilation, it's an ambitious attempt to reclaim lost gems from Dylan's much maligned career low point. While many listeners may not realise it, the eighties were also a prolific period for Dylan. Cherry-picking material from his eight studio albums released in just over a decade is an interesting challenge for the likes of the Hold Steady's Craig Finn and Blitzen Trapper. But, ultimately, the album doesn't elevate itself beyond a curio for the most dedicated Dylan fan.

Various Artists - Bob Dylan In The Eighties: Volume One Album Review

The good news is that, for the most part, the project does succeed in breathing new life into songs long since neglected by Bob. Stripped of the fashionable production elements of the time, there is indeed hidden beauty to the updated and diverse performances here. The song choices are also bold. Not content with simply choosing better respected compositions, there's a feeling that the artists have really tried to push themselves. For example, many would have put their money on 'Oh Mercy''s 'Most Of The Time' making an appearance, far fewer would have hoped for 'Under The Red Sky''s 'Wiggle, Wiggle'. Surprisingly, only the latter is attempted here. Yet it doesn't feel like an academic exercise to rescue these songs from obscurity, there's a real affection for the material and many of the performances warrant multiple listens.

The bad news is that, despite an impressive selection of artists contributing, the range of musical genres covered does provide for some really awkward moments. For example, I'm pretty sure that we didn't really need a dub reggae version of 'Brownsville Girl'. There's nothing that detracts from the source material, but something a little more cohesive may have been more compelling as a record. When the songs really are stripped back to their bare bones, they work far better - perhaps because the focus shifts from musical reinvention to Dylan's lyrics. That's where the real joy is here, because the eighties production and flat delivery on records like 'Down In The Groove' really did mask some classic writing from Bob.

They come from much more humble beginnings, scrawled on stationary from The Roger Smith hotel in Washington, D.C. back in 1965. The writing is a piece of musical history – with doodles - a hat, a bird, an animal with antlers - andcrossed-out words, it gives some insight into Dylan’s creative process at work. Dylan was 24 when he recorded the song in 1965 about a debutante who becomes a loner when she's cast from upper-class social circles..
