Seven Pop Acts That Alternative People Will Admit They Love

Halsey CHVRCHES The Twilight Sad Bjork Bring Me The Horizon Grimes

The world is by no means split into those who like alternative music and those who like pop music, but we can't help but get excited when we see a hugely diverse fanbase for an artist generally considered a chart act. Here are seven artists that bring together some very different music fans.

Billie Eilish

The alternative crowd are naturally used to turning the other way when a new face hits the charts, but there's something about this moody, quirky teen that has caught everyone's attention. Not only does she come across as a real person we can all relate to, as opposed to another manufactured, vapid popstar, her music has a weirdness and a darkness to it that has the alternative folk enchanted. And yet, her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is still as catchy and accessible as you'd expect from a chart-topping record.

Bring Me The Horizon Announce New Album 'Amo'

Bring Me The Horizon

One of the biggest and most successful British rock acts of the last decade, Bring Me The Horizon have announced details of their next studio album Amo – but it won’t be released until 2019!

The outfit’s sixth studio album, named after the Portuguese word for ‘love’, is going to be released on January 11th next year, and the band released its first single ‘Mantra’ this week. Amo can be pre-ordered online already.

Debuted via Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show on Tuesday (August 21st), the brand new track features the lyrics “Do you wanna start a cult with me?”, which previously appeared on a billboard used to tease the possibility of new music that appeared in central London.

David Straw's Top 10 Albums Of 2015

Parkway Drive Coheed and Cambria Enter Shikari While She Sleeps Bring Me The Horizon

Counterparts - Tragedy Will Find Us, Vision of Disorder - Razed to the Ground, Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit

10. Counterparts - Tragedy Will Find Us
Staunch defenders of their metalcore tag, Counterparts might have a bit of trouble keeping it, given that Tragedy Will Find Us is at its best when it feels like a pure hardcore record. Stillborn & Thread start the album with style, while the lilting guitar intro Burn bridges the gap between the single and Stranger perfectly.
Collapse is Tragedy.'s finest moment, though. Emotionally charged, it's the most 'metal' track on the album that builds to a fitting crescendo.
They sound excellent live, too. Joining Stick To Your Guns and Stray From The Path (we'll get to them later) for a UK tour in February, it'd be a sin to miss Counterparts, if this record is anything to go by.

9. Vision of Disorder - Razed to the Ground
Over the past couple of years, there's been a definite sense that metalcore is beginning to have run its course. Fortunately, all it needed was for one of the bands who crafted it in the first place to release an album to remind everyone just how good it can be.
That band is Vision of Disorder, and that album is Razed to the Ground.
Heart of Darkness and Red on the Walls are vintage VoD, white hot and delivered hard, while Electric Sky could be VoD covering Pantera covering Black Sabbath. Yeah, really.
Tim Williams' vocals are as strong as ever, and it's his lashings of Layne Staley-esque lines that lift the album even more.
Razed to the Ground is an album that'll pass so many by, while paler imitations shine brighter in the mainstream conscious, and for a record as good as this, that's a crying shame.

Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit Album Review

Having spent the best part of a decade in the metal mid-card, Bring Me The Horizon's recently released fifth album 'That's The Spirit' narrowly missed topping the UK album chart.  The high placing shouldn't have come as a surprise though, given their Main Stage allocation at this year's Reading and Leeds Festivals, which will be followed with headline dates here following a run of North American shows.

Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit Album Review

It is fair to say that each previous record from this Sheffield group has seen a development of their sound, but this is the first on which they have completely cast off their metalcore roots - and they are all the better for it.  Promotional tracks 'Happy Song', 'Throne' and 'True Friends' are accurate indicators of the quality of this collection, but crucially, they are not just the pick of the bunch.  You could randomly pick any song here and have a genuine single, though particularly of note is the undeniable anthem 'Avalanche', while 'Follow You' is equally brilliant and shows they can work at a lower tempo and dynamic.  Whether or not this direction is appreciated by their original followers is questionable, but mainstream success is all but nailed on for Bring Me The Horizon - it may have been unexpected, but they have without doubt produced one of the rock records of the year.
