The Grammy Award nominations for 2016 have finally been announced, with Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar predictably leading with a total of seven nods each. There's a massive 83 categories altogether, so here's a summary of what's going on in the main four.

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift is a top contender in the main categories

Taylor Swift is pretty much a Grammy staple these days having been nominated every year since 2012. She hasn't won anything the last two years, but we'd be surprised if she loses out in 2016. Single 'Blank Space' is up for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, while 'Bad Blood' featuring Kendrick Lamar could also bag Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video, and album '1989' is looking at Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Another artist with two songs up for nominations is The Weeknd; 'Can't Feel My Face' has a nod for Record, Song and Pop Solo Performance and 'Fifty Shades of Grey' soundtrack song 'Earned It' is listed under Best R&B Performance and R&B Song, as well as Best Song Written For Visual Media. His latest album 'Beauty Behind The Madness' is up for Album Of The Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Kendrick LamarKendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly' was a huge hit this year

Our third headliner, Kendrick Lamar is representing the rap world with 'To Pimp A Butterfly' leading nominations for Album Of The Year and Best Rap Album. Additionally, his song 'Alright' is vying for Song Of The Year, Best Rap Performance and Rap Song, and Music Video. He's garnered additional recognition for 'These Walls' featuring Bilal, Anna Wise and Thundercat, which is listed for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

So what are the main contenders up against? Other names for Record Of The Year are D'Angelo And The Vanguard with 'Really Love' (another one for Best R&B Song and a top choice for Best R&B Album with 'Black Messiah'), Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' dancefloor hit 'Uptown Funk' (unsurprisingly also up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and the album 'Uptown Special' going for Pop Vocal Album), and Ed Sheeran with his 'X' single 'Thinking Out Loud' (Pop Solo Performance and Song Of The Year contender).

Meanwhile, Album Of The Year is looking at Best Alternative Music Album and Best Country Album possibles 'Sound & Color' by Alabama Shakes and 'Traveller' by Chris Stapleton respectively. While the latter is also up for Best Country Solo Performance and Country Song for the album's title track, the former has also been listed for Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical) with the song 'Don't Wanna Fight' a favourite for Best Rock Song and Rock Performance.

Stapleton's main competition is Little Big Town, also down for Best Country Song for 'Girl Crush' and Country Album for 'Pain Killer'. 'Girl Crush' has also been given a nod for Song Of The Year and Best Country Duo/Group Performance. The final name for 'Song Of The Year' is Wiz Khalifa's 'Furious 7' song 'See You Again' featuring Charlie Puth - another one for Pop Duo/Group Performance and Song Written For Visual Media.

One of the most exciting categories is Best New Artist, which this year compares Melbourne newcomer Courtney Barnett, 2015 Brit 'Critics' Choice award winner James Bay, Georgia-born country star Sam Hunt, YouTube hit Tori Kelly and 'All About That Bass' hitmaker Meghan Trainor.

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards will air on CBS on February 15th 2016.
