Wonder Review

Excellent

This film may be based on RJ Palacio's fictional bestseller, but it approaches its story and characters in a way that feels bracingly true to life. It's also a rare movie that's infused with strong emotions right from the start, but never dips into any kind of sentimentality. Indeed, director-cowriter Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) holds his nerve as he takes the audience into some remarkably moving situations. And most importantly, it's the kind of film that encourages us to make the world a kinder place.

At the centre of the story is 10-year-old Auggie (Room's Jacob Tremblay), who has been homeschooled by his mother (Julia Roberts) and is now entering a mainstream school. Everyone in the family is nervous about this, including his dad (Owen Wilson) and big sister Via (Izabela Vidovic), because Auggie has a facial deformity that makes him a target for small-minded bullies. But his headmaster (Mandy Patinkin) is determined to help smooth the way, introducing him to the sensitive Jack (Suburbicon's Noah Jupe) and the popular boy Julian (Bryce Gheisar). While Jack becomes a friend, Julian's vicious taunts make Auggie's life difficult. Meanwhile, Via is left on her own to face the fact that her best friend (Danielle Rose Russell) seems to be drifting away.

The story is told from a variety of perspectives, which adds surprising insight as the film explores how Auggie's condition affects him and the people around him. The details are so finely observed that the movie often feels almost journalistic in its approach, which makes it that much more involving.

August 'Auggie' Pullman is a 10-year-old boy born with Treacher Collins syndrome which has caused facial birth defects and he's had no fewer 27 surgeries. He has been homeschooled throughout his childhood but is about to enter his first year of mainstream school at Beecher Prep. His parents are, of course, worried that he'll be the subject of bullying - no matter how much they assure him that he's special. Unfortunately, that's just what happens to him, but there are at least some school kids that are determined to build a friendship with him and make him feel welcome. Some kids are reluctant to associate with him, but after hearing some revelatory things, realise that the people they want to be are the people that will love Auggie for who he is.

The Wind Rises Trailer

Jiro Horikoshi is an aeronautical engineer whose childhood was filled with dreams about becoming a pilot. His poor vision meant that he would never realise his ambition, but he is encouraged to keep up his passion by Italian plane designer Caproni. Resolving to design aircrafts instead of fly them, Jiro studies the art at university, during which time he meets an attractive young woman named Naoko. Their relationship was born out of the dangerous circumstances of the Great Kanto Earthquake, throughout which they helped one another off a fast moving train. As their life together progresses, Naoko falls ill and Jiro struggles to bring in a regular income. He must succeed in the challenge of building the most exquisitely beautiful aeroplane in the world in order to get back on his feet, as his career could be the only thing he has left.

'The Wind Rises' is romantic, heart-wrenching animated adventure directed and written by the Oscar winning Hayao Miyazaki ('Spirited Away', 'Princess Mononoke', 'Howl's Moving Castle'). This Japanese drama, loosely based on Tatsuo Hori's 1936 short story 'The Wind Has Risen', features the voices of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci in the English version. It is due for release in the UK on May 9th 2014.

The Wind Rises may not have been the flashiest or most talked-about movie at last night's Academy Awards but could prove to be one of the most arresting animated movies of all time upon its widespread UK release in May. The new Studio Ghibli picture was completely overshadowed by Disney's Frozen at the Oscars, with the winter musical's months of box office success and performance from Idina Menzel at the ceremony proving too difficult to ignore.

The Wind Rises Still 2
'The Wind Rises' Follows The Story Of Jiro Horikoshi, A Designer Of Fighter Planes.

Animated in the distinctive, delicate and detailed anime style, the Japanese film deals with challenging historical events and presents them in a creative yet respectful way. The Wind Rises is a look at the life of real-life Japanese engineer, Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II. The story follows the genius Jiro from his childhood to becoming an adult amidst the savagery of war.

Homeland Season 3 Episode 6: Still Positive

Claire Danes Mandy Patinkin Rupert Friend Damian Lewis Morena Baccarin

It's taken six episodes but finally Homeland is back on its feet and back to its old ways, sending blistering plot twists, confusing u-turns and stunning revelations our way. Last night's episode in the UK, 'Still Positive,' saw Saul at an all-time low, Javadi's true ways exposed and Carrie turn the tables on her abduction.

Carrie's Role As Double Agent Has Worked Well So Far.

The acting director of the CIA was still reeling after last episode's revelation that the gung-ho Senator Lockhart was in line for the permanent CIA role despite weeks of praise for keeping the organisation steady after the Langley bombing. He also resigned himself to accepting that his wife was still seeing the lover that she met in India. Another man may have stormed out or shouted; Saul had bigger fish to fry as Majid "The Magician" Javadi had captured undercover agent Carrie.

Until last week's final five minutes of CIA drama Homeland, fans of the show were beginning to wonder if the rest of season three would be as improbable and sedate as its beginning episodes. Just for you UK viewers, here's the recap of The Yoga Play.

HomelandSaul and Senator Lockhart in Homeland

We'd been teased by the absence of Brody for the first two episodes only to be hit smack bang in the face with an hour long, heavy handed, Nick-fest in Caracas where we saw the usually conniving Langley bombing suspect resign himself to heroin addiction rather than plot his escape
