Red Hot Chili Peppers have revealed details of their first new album in five years, announcing that their eleventh album The Getaway will be released on June 17th.

It’s their first album since 2011’s I’m With You, and is produced by Danger Mouse (aka. Brian Burton) and mixed by Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich. Fans have noted that it’s therefore the first Chili Peppers album since 1989’s Mother’s Milk not to have been produced by Rick Rubin.

Fans had been awaiting the prospect of new material for many months, ever since the band were confirmed as one of the headliners of T In The Park and Reading and Leeds Festival this year.

The album’s release is preceded by its lead single, called ‘Dark Necessities’, which was released at the same time as the group made the announcement of its parent album. The audio track can be heard below, with the new album's artwork displayed in the clip.

Back in February, the group’s bass player Flea revealed to Q magazine they were “heading into a new era” with their new album.

“We're near the end of it… Danger Mouse is producing this time, instead of Rick Rubin. We’re heading into a new era and we're really excited.”

When asked what it would sound like given the change of personnel behind the production desk, he added: “It's new and different but without sacrificing the good bits of us. There are some songs we already had, and some new ones too. I can't wait to play it live.”

In addition to their UK live dates this summer, they’re also due to co-headline Lollapalooza in 2016 alongside Radiohead. No corresponding tour for The Getaway has yet been announced, but fans can be reasonably assured that one will come along soon.
