Bruno Mars - 24K Magic Album Review

Having reportedly sold over 100 million records, Bruno Mars must be considered amongst the elite of global pop superstars.  The release of this, his third album, will be supported by a huge UK tour starting in April 2017, which includes an impressive four nights at London's O2 Arena.

Bruno Mars - 24K Magic Album Review

That Mars kicks off the album an upbeat number comes as no surprise, but the funk-dance of hybrid of the title track fails to really lift off.  He continues the vibe with 'Chunky', but it is 'Perm' that is the first cut that genuinely impresses, propelled by his vocal flow.  The hooks of 'That's What I Like' are undeniable, but R'n'B seduction it is not - telling the focus of your attention that they're lucky because of what you like is beyond arrogance.  Much better is the smooth 'Versace On The Floor', while 'Finesse' adds little more to an initially interesting groove.

Thankfully the apologetic 'Too Good To Say Goodbye' sees Mars back on top of his game for a soulful finale, but being the ninth track there feels to be something amiss.  If this was a classic collection comprising of only brilliance, you could understand, but it isn't.  For an artist of such standing and sales figures, you expect more of the magic promised in the title, but instead we have delusions of grandeur.

Bruno Mars Feared 24K Magic Wouldn't Be As Good As Uptown Funk

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars feared '24K Magic' wouldn't be as successful as 'Uptown Funk'.

The 31-year-old musician has admitted he found it ''daunting'' working on a new album and has hinted he felt pressure to come up with more hits following the success of the 2014 track, which Bruno claims was ''the biggest song'' he has worked one.

Speaking on '60 Minutes', the Hawaii-born star said: ''This album, it was daunting, because coming off of 'Uptown Funk' was like the biggest song I've ever been a part of. And then you're like, alright, now what are you gonna do?''

Rio 2 Review

Good

After the snappy, clever 2011 original, this sequel feels rather lazy by comparison: it's still visually colourful and sometimes witty, but the overcrowded story is all over the place, mixing wacky slapstick and corny satire with a political message. And none of this is edgy enough to make it memorable, except perhaps the addition of one new character, a deranged poisonous frog with delusions of romance, voiced by the riotously operatic Kristin Chenoweth.

At the centre again are the rare blue macaws Blu and Jewel (Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway), who now have three feisty kids at their bird sanctuary in Rio de Janeiro. Then their human keepers Tulio and Linda (Rodrigo Santoro and Leslie Mann) spot another blue macaw deep in the Amazon, so Blu and Jewel fly off to investigate with their children and buddies (including Will.i.am and Jamie Foxx). Sure enough, this turns out to be Jewel's long-lost family, overseen by her father (Andy Garcia) and guarded by her heartthrob ex Roberto (Bruno Mars). But there's an evil logger threatening the rainforest, and Blu's old nemesis Nigel the cockatoo (Jemaine Clement) is out for revenge.

After the oddly flat prologue in Rio, the film kicks up a gear when it arrives in the jungle, where the imagery becomes far more dense and colourful, leading to some wonderfully outrageous musical numbers and raucous action sequences. The level of detail is impressive, as is the range of creatures thrown into the story. But the script never quite rises to this level of invention, once again simplistically putting the city-bird Blu in an alien natural environment, with added in-laws and ex-boyfriends. Much more fun is Nigel's interaction with his poison-frog sidekick, even if his subplot never builds any steam.

Cordless Rockers Red Hot Chilli Peppers Caught Out With Super Bowl Set

Red Hot Chili Peppers Bruno Mars Super Bowl

“Hang on a minute, their guitars aren’t plugged in to anything” an eagle-eyed Super Bowl viewer probably said somewhere in America. And he/she was right: while Anthony Kiedis sang alongside main performer Bruno Mars live, the others were just faking it.

Super Bowl Half Time Well And Truly Rocked By Bruno Mars And RHCP

Super Bowl Bruno Mars Red Hot Chili Peppers

Besides a victory for the Seattle Seahawks – and a long overdue one at that – last night’s Super Bowl was also a triumph for Bruno Mars. Mars’ Half Time show with the Red Hot Chili Peppers was full of soul – no gimmicks, just good music. Well, maybe there was one gimmick. Time Magazine reports on the show. Mars’ performance kicked off with a song performed by a children’s choir, which, although it was cute, was undeniably only there for the cute factor. The song quickly segued into a drum solo by the multitalented Bruno himself, which was later taken over by his brother Eric Hernandez (Bruno Mars was originally born Peter Hernandez).

Bruno Mars, Super Bowl Press Conference
Mars refused to give away any details during his Super Bowl press conference last week.

Things got real as the golden jacket and skinny tie came out and Mars stretched out the good ol’ vocal chords with a performance of the eternal crowd pleaser Locked Out Of Heaven. His jumbo band of brass, backup singers and bass put the song across nicely. The synchronized dance to Treasure was just icing on the cake.

How Will Bruno Mars Fare At The Superbowl? 5 Of The Best (And Worst) Half-Time Shows

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars is hoping to ‘uplift the people’ this Sunday when he performs at the coveted Superbowl halftime slot. The ‘Greande’ singer is currently preparing for his set and of course making sure his trademark hairdo is in tact, telling a press conference, "I got three gallons of hairspray in this thing, so I'm good!"

The singer, who just picked up a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal album, will be joined onstage by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with Mars saying. "The first band I thought of was the Red Hot Chili Peppers - I've been a fan of theirs for such a long time, I admire their career."

While the idea of Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers sounds pretty spectacular you never can tell how a Superbowl halftime show is going to go down. Whilst it's fair to say that the performances are always memorable, sometimes its not really for the right reasons. To help Bruno prepare here's a look back at arguably five of the best and worst Superbowl half time shows in recent years.

Rio 2 - Alternative Trailer

Blu and Jewel believe that they are two of a kind as the only full grown blue macaws in existence as they make their home in a cosy Brazilian bird sanctuary with their fast-growing offspring. With Jewel developing itchy feet (or should that be talons?) and the 'babies' desperate to learn more about the world and their kind, the arrival of news of another flock of their kind deep in the Amazon rainforest sends Jewel reeling with excitement at the thought of vacating to the wild. Blu is less fond of the idea, now being comfortably accustomed to their artificial city lifestyle, but goes along on the adventure for the sake of Jewel. As they arrive in the jungle with their friends, they meet Jewel's formidable father and some old friends - and if that's not enough for Blu to worry about, Nigel the evil Sulphur-crested Cockatoo has also taken to the wild with revenge on his mind. But Nigel might not be the only thing to fear in the unpredictable Amazon wilderness.

Blu and Jewel's babies are growing up fast and developing an eagerness to learn about the world outside their Brazilian bird sanctuary run by kind owners Linda and Tulio. The free-spirited Jewel is also getting itchy feet, with the death-defying adventures of 'Rio' now wearing off, and is determined to venture out into the Amazon rainforest to meet other blue macaws and teach her children about life in the jungle. Joining them once again are their colourful avian friends Pedro, Nico and Rafael, and Luiz the bulldog who, just like Blu, struggle to adapt to the wild. On their new journey, Jewel meets her father after a long time apart, though he is anything but warm towards her slightly awkward mate. The in laws are the least of Blu's worries though as Nigel the evil Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is set to return once again with a revenge scheme on his mind.

'Rio 2' is the brilliant and wacky sequel to 2011's 'Rio' and sees the return of director Carlos Saldanha ('Ice Age', 'Robots') with a new co-screenwriter Don Rhymer ('Big Momma's House', 'The Santa Clause 2'). As well as all your favourite characters from the original movie, you'll get to see a lot more adorable new creatures as it hits UK cinemas in 3D on April 4th 2014.

Bruno Mars To Perform At Super Bowl 2014 Half-time Show, Has He Earned It?

Bruno Mars Beyonce Knowles

Grammy award winner Bruno Mars is set to perform at the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show on February 2nd 2013 in New Jersey.

Rumours began this weekend that the 'When I Was Your Man' singer will be playing the Super Bowl halftime show and on Sunday the truth finally surfaced. Bruno Mars was present for NFL's announcement on 'Fox NFL Sunday', alongside Fox co-host Terry Bradshaw and football analyst Michael Strahan at Times Square, announcing that he will be the halftime act.

Mars will have to pull out all the strings to top last year's halftime act as Beyoncé's performance was unforgettable to say the least. The multi-award winning singer performed hit singles such as 'Halo' and 'Crazy in Love' whilst dancing all around the stage and giving fans the rare treat of a 'Destiny's Child' reunion - Beyoncé definitely tore the house down.

Bruno Mars Remains Silent Following Mother's Death

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars was left grieving this weekend following the sudden and unexpected death of his mother, Bernadette Hernandez, on Saturday (June 1) after suffering a brain aneurysm. Bernadette passed at the Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she was rushed to after becoming unresponsive following a collapse at her home in the Hawaii city.

Bruno's mother immigrated to Hawaii from the Philippines at an early age, meeting Bruno's father Peter Hernandez whilst she worked as a hula dancer at the the same bar he played percussion for the house band. The two nurtured Bruno's musical talents from a young age and the Grammy-winning singer has commented on the influence of his mother on his success in countless interviews in the past. Bernadette was also a singer.

Understandably, the bereaving Mars - real name Peter Gene Hernandez - has remained silent since the death was made public and has yet to comment on the situation to the press. The singer was due to begin a tour in the U.S. in late June (beginning June 22), however the death could potentially affect the concert schedule. There hasn't been any word on whether the death will result in some concert rescheduling just yet.

Heidi Klum Mobbed By Half-Nude Women's Rights Demonstrators

Heidi Klum Psy Bruno Mars

Heidi Klum was mobbed by equal rights protestors bearing Heidi Hate messages across their naked torsos during a crucial moment on 'Germany's Next Top Model' yesterday (May 31st 2013).

The supermodel was about to name the winner of the modelling competition on live television when two topless female demonstrators for FEMEN burst onto the stage to shout at her with the angry message on their chests reading 'Heidi Horror Picture Show'. The organisation they were rallying for was a Ukrainian group who regularly coordinate naked and topless campaigns in defence of equality between men and women. Though the incident was cut from the live recording, Heidi kept her cool and quipped to the audience, 'I have just been seeing boobies in front of me. Too bad it happened at this special moment!'

The protestors seemed to be the only ones who disliked Heidi, however, with 'Gangnam Style' rapper Psy Tweeting a picture of the two of them with the caption: '[Heidi Klum] stoped by my green room and said "ThankU psy". She's so beautiful & nice at the same time!! #Unfair lol'. Heidi also Tweeted a photo of herself and Bruno Mars saying, 'Thank you for a great performance on my show last night in Germany [Bruno Mars] You are a really cool dude!'

BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend was just that - a BIG weekend! With a huge range of hit artists, the radio station left no genre uncovered over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend (May 24th - 26th 2013).

Day 1 saw performances from Dizzee Rascal as he promotes his upcoming fifth album due out later in the year; Rudimental, whose debut album 'Home' has had some remarkable reviews and a number one spot on the UK album chart; Rita Ora who is also working on a new album; and her platinum selling boyfriend Calvin Harris. Saturday brought in an equally impressive line-up with Ellie Goulding who is in the UK before she embarks on a lengthy US tour later in the summer; The Saturdays minus Rochelle Humes who is still recovering from the birth of her first baby Alaia-Mai; and Iggy Azalea whose debut album release is imminent. Robbie Williams Hooks Up With Dizzee Rascal At Radio 1 Big Weekend To Kick Start The Festival In Style

Robbie Williams Dizzee Rascal Rudimental Chase and Status Biffy Clyro Bruno Mars Radio 1 Big Weekend

Dizzee Rascal was on the bill to open day one of the Radio 1 Big Weekend in Derry’s Ebrington Square on Friday (May 24), but rather than just keep the performance to himself the rapper decided to treat the fans to a special guest: Robbie Williams! The two performed their new duet 'Goin’ Crazy' much to the pleasure of the audience, who were already being treated to some amazing weather and performances over the weekend.

The three day event, which began yesterday (May 24) and will end on Sunday (May 26), has already seen its fair share of surprises in addition to the Dizzee-Robbie hook-up, with troubles at Heathrow forcing two acts (Angel Haze and Aluna George) to pull out of the festival last minute, whilst drum and bass duo Chase & Status saw a way around the problem by hiring their own private jet to get to the three-day event.

Meanwhile, Rudimental, who were in Northern Ireland at the time but their equipment wasn't, had to borrow their kit from other performers in order to play their set. Producer Amir Amor said: "We borrowed guitars, bass, microphones, a bit of love! Everything we could. But the gig just blew us away."

Bruno Mars Fan To Prom - Singer Delights Fan With Faux-Prom Fun

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars fan to prom? Or Bruno Mars prom to fan? When Emily Torres from Michagan pleaded for Bruno Mars to take her to her high school prom, we doubt she envisioned what would happen. The Locked Out of Heaven singer made her day, week month and year with his response.

He said: "I'm gonna hook you up with a dress to make you look just as beautiful and amazing as you are and when I come to the city near you I got four tickets for you and your friends so you can see me. You're gonna be front row and you're gonna be my guest." Now, we’re assuming a custom Gucci dress goes someway towards atoning for his absence, and if it doesn’t, then tickets to see him at his show as “his guest” definitely will. And if THAT wasn’t enough, on his appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show, after giving Emily the good news, he treated her to a dance in front of the audience, saying that because he couldn’t be at her prom, he’d bring the prom to her. Adorable scenes, inevitably, ensued.

55th Grammys Preview: 'Music's Biggest Night' Wont Fail To Impress

Grammy Awards Beyonce Knowles Prince Taylor Swift Maroon 5 Kelly Clarkson Florence and the Machine Frank Ocean Alicia Keys Elton John Ed Sheeran Bruno Mars Sting Jennifer Lopez Rihanna Justin Timberlake Justin Bieber Mumford And Sons Fun Black Keys Jack White

Annually, the Grammys is one of the biggest events for music across America and in Europe. In fact, it has dubbed itself 'music's biggest night'. Celebrating the best in pop, hiphop, soul, R&B and much of what comes in between, it never fails to be a veritable who's who from the Spotify playlists of the masses. And this year will be no different. Not only are the nominees ones to look out for, absences are worthy of note, as are this year's presenters and some very special performances.

As Yahoo report, this year's presenters include Grammy royalty, Prince, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez, all of whom have been nominated or won Grammys before.

In terms of performances to look forward to, this year we have some unusual and largely unexpected pair ups. Elton John and Ed Sheeran will take to the stage together. An unusual pairing, they're both Brits with unusual song writing talent. While John is a true showman and is well known for his intereSting outfits and outrageous glasses, Sheeran is distinctly more low key. We're not sure how this is going to work, but we're guessing it'll be great. Bruno Mars, Sting and Rihanna will all also perform together, as will Alicia Keys and Maroon 5, and Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert.

Bruno Mars has revealed a slightly surprising influence on his new album Unorthodox Jukebox – the late British blues singer Amy Winehouse! We reviewed the multi-million selling 27 year-old’s second album and, though we found ourselves impressed with it, we must admit we’d be hard-pushed to pinpoint the Winehouse influence stylistically.

However, talking to The Associated Press, Mars said "I felt like everything I've been saying, everything I wanted to do, she did it. It was one of those things like, 'Damn it! Damn it!' It was perfect.” He went on to enthuse "You couldn't put it in a box 'cause it could be played on rock stations, it could be played on rhythmic stations, it could be played on pop radio, and I've always wanted to make music like that – that could be spread out, and can't be pigeon-held to one thing. And they did it. Her and Mark Ronson."

Mars once again re-enlisted the help of his song writing pals The Smeezingtons for Unorthodox Jukebox but also has Mark Ronson on too – who of course was instrumental in Winehouse’s fame. Talking of the additional collaborations on the album – several producers are involved – Mars enthused “That's when the fun comes in. Now, it's time to have some fun. Let's put the dream band together... I love their take on pop music... It was a big ole science project.” Unorthodox Jukebox is out now and, a challenge from The Game notwithstanding, should find itself on top of the US Billboard 200 this weekend.

Bruno Mars New Album Is "a Big Ole Science Project"

Bruno Mars Amy Winehouse Mark Ronson

Like many artists that eventually plough their way out of the woodwork, Bruno Mars began his career as a writer for other singers. His work crops up in the portfolios of Flo Rider, Alexandra Burke, Sean Kingston, Travie McCoy, Adam Levine and Brandy. He even co-wrote Cee Lo Green's 'Forget You'. However, he always set his sights very high and revealed in an interview recently that he aspired to the musical heights of Amy Winehouse- which, it appears, is why he's now teaming up with Mark Ronson, the producer that pushed Amy into super-stardom.

"It was perfect," he said, of Amy's Back to Black album. "You couldn't put it in a box 'cause it could be played [anywhere]... And they did it. Her and Mark Ronson." Having grown up listening to a wide variety of music, all of it has rubbed off but in a kind of mis-matched way, he's an endearing if not brilliant patchwork quilt. His latest album 'Unorthodox Dukebox' is also a great patchwork, as Mars has brought together some of the business' best producers including Diplo, The Smeezingtons (who did his entire first album), Jeff Bhasker, Paul Epworth, and Emile Haynie. He described these collaborations to the Associated Press as "a big ole science project."

The album has got fairl good reviews so far but he's already joking about a future 'comeback', saying "You know my sister sings, my brother plays drums in my band. My whole family is a bunch of musicians. So, when the right time comes, you'll see it on some kind of reunion tour, CBS special, 'Behind the Music: Bruno's Family,' trying to revive my career."

Bruno Mars - Unorthodox Jukebox Album Review

Bruno Mars' success has been odd in that he as an artist and his marketing team have always been in slight conflict about where he stands demographically. Aesthetically everything about the Hawaiian-born singer suggests an angling for young teenagers, a cutesy image that's instantly agreeable to anyone under the age of 18.

Bruno Mars - Unorthodox Jukebox Album Review

Yet that contrasts with Mars himself, a man who isn't afraid of a cuss or two - Unorthodox Jukebox has plenty- and who, unlike several other names he consistently appears alongside at the top of the charts, is fully in control of his own song writing, developing a style that is far more closer to his actual age, 27, and actual being, than the target market it would appear he's been dressed for. It's a contrast that worked well for his 2010 debut LP Doo-Wops & Hooligans, leading to a Grammy for single 'Just The Way You Are,' and on Unorthodox Jukebox he pushes that chasm between his two facets wider, with the first half of the album in particular trained either for the dance floor or for the arenas he's now well become accustomed to. His lyrics flick between an open air of honesty and traditional proclamations of desire and couplets that lick with sexual intent - and even when he is at his more innocent, phrases like "you make a mess of me" are undoubtedly delivered with a rogeuish glint in the eye.

He's at his best when making straight ahead pop songs, and so it goes that those are this album's best moments. Shimmering opening 'Young Girls' is the sort of song that all those of 80's influenced blogtronica type artists would secretly love to be able to make, so big is it in sound and atmosphere. 'Locked Out Of Heaven' recalls the The Police a little in its sultrily-grooving bass lines and strutting guitars; make no mistake, even as Mars is singing banalities like "your sex takes me to paradise" he's canny in the influences he's cherry picking, and knows how to mould them just so to make something that's texturally rich but ultimately massively accessible.

Happy 27th Birthday Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars celebrates his 27th birthday today, and the Do-Wops & Hooligans star looks like he's going to have quite the year ahead of him has he readies for the release of his second album Unorthodox Jukebox in December. Before that, his new single Locked Out Of Heaven has been getting played on the radio, and it's something that - even after millions of sales - the artist hasn't grown tired of. He tweeted on Saturday (October 6th) "Locked out of heaven is on the radio!!! This feeling never gets old. So thankful. Thank you Thank you Thank you."

No word on how Mr Mars is celebrating his birthday as yet, indeed it may be unlikely he'll get much of a chance given the hectic promotional schedule he'll be getting involved with over the coming weeks. There are high hopes from his record label Elektra that he'll be giving them another smash hit after his debut LP went in at the third spot on the Billboard charts in 2010, going on to sell six million records worldwide.

It's going to be a tall order, but the omens are looking good with some of the Twitter feedback Mars has received for his new song looking positive. We're pretty sure that even if he doesn't have time to celebrate today, there's going to be plenty of revelry to be had in the coming months.

Bruno Mars Debuts New Single: 'Locked Out Of Heaven'

Bruno Mars

This fall sees Bruno Mars on the rise again, as he will be presenting on Saturday Night Live on October 20th where he will also be performing his new single. It has been two years since his last album release Doo-Wops & Hooligans and with this single as a taster for his new album Unorthodox Dukebox fans are unlikely to be disappointed with his new material.

The new album, he says, is “me going into the studio and recording and writing whatever I want. This album represents my freedom”, so reports Digital Spy. Mars continued saying: "I listen to a lot of music, and I want to have the freedom and luxury to walk into a studio and say, 'Today I want to do a hip-hop, R&B, soul or rock record'."

Bruno Mars' 'Locked Out of Heaven' has its roots in soul and could almost be plucked out of Motown's '60s heyday. Akin to many of his previous songs, his new single is a love song for the ladies, and with lyrics like “Never had much faith in love or miracles … But swimming in your world is something spiritual” his female fan base is only like to grow.

Bruno Mars, Just The Way You Are Single Review

After lending his vocals on Travie McCoy's hugely successful Billionaire, Bruno Mars releases his first official single Just the Way You Are this month. Already a number one hit in the US and a top ten hit in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, it seems like Bruno is set to take the UK by storm. Whilst it's kind of obvious why this song has been a hit worldwide, it sadly comes across a bit too generic for a first outing.
