Whenever we say "it's been a great month for music" we truly mean it. We mean it as much as we mean it when we say that THIS month has been pretty poor. Reviews across the board for July albums have been average at best, with Ed Sheeran, Iggy Azalea and Beyonce being unexpected disappointments - though we did manage to uncover a few gems among the rubble... 

Sum 41 - Order in Decline

Most of us haven't listened to Sum 41 since our noughties skater days, but you might be surprised to find that their latest release is far from the cheesy nostalgia that you'd expect. Instead, it's the heaviest album they've ever made and it's this kind of thematically dark and crashing metal that's going to bring them a new kind of respect.

Not all heroes wear capes – in fact, they sometimes wear baseball caps! Hip-hop star Chance the Rapper has revealed for the first time how he saved a man’s life last year by pulling him from a burning car.

The incident, which the 25 year old has never spoken about before, happened on Easter Sunday in 2018 and was recounted in the rapper’s summation of the year’s most memorable moments for him.

“Ay so I never told this to the world but my friends can merch. I saved a persons by myself on Easter Sunday this year omw to church,” the rapper explained on Instagram this week. “Basically I was driving to church dolo, about to go south on lakeshore [drive] and another car drives into the wall in front of me goin like 90 mph comin off the exit.”

We reported yesterday that the ever-prodigious Kanye West was teasing the possibility of releasing an album every week for the next year, incredible as that seems. However, one of those seems to be coming together soon, with Chance the Rapper revealing that he’s planning a collaboration album with Yeezy.

The 25 year old rapper was speaking to Complex this week and mentioning that, alongside his collaboration with Kanye, he was also working with Donald Glover – aka Childish Gambino – on another project.

“I've been actively working on the project with Childish. I’m going to do a seven-track with Ye,” Chance told the interviewer. He and Kanye are slated to begin working together in July.

He may have gone home empty-handed from the BRIT Awards last night, but Skepta’s profile is set to grow even further with the announcement that he is to headline the 2017 Wireless Festival in London this summer, alongside American heavyweights The Weekend and Chance the Rapper.

This year’s event is set to take place from July 7th-9th in North London’s Finsbury Park. Tickets are currently on sale for the 2017 edition of the festival, with further acts still to be announced.

Chance the Rapper is returning to the UK this summer with two headline dates lined up in addition to his various festival appearances. There's no details on any further UK performances, so you best get to these shows while you've got the 'chance' (sorry).

The rising hip hop star hailing from Chicago will hit London's Electric Brixton towards the end of June 2015 and Manchester's The Ritz at the beginning of July, and he will be joined by the UK's own Snakehips as special guests.

Ok, let’s talk about Chance the Rapper and No Better Blues, because that’s what you’ve been listening to all day anyway. And if it isn’t… why? Chance and The Social Experiment just released the track via SoundCloud this past Thursday. Besides being a really cool song (I’ll get to that part) No Better Blues also represents another steps in creators’ efforts to get their work straight to the people, skipping industry middlemen. Since CtR and The Social Experiment posted the link to their Twitter, the track has reached No. 2 on the network’s Trending 140.

Chance the Rapper is trying another unconventional avenue for music distribution - direct SoundCloud download.

The release is part of Twitter’s not-quite-thriving music service, so users can listen to it without even leaving the page/app. On Thursday, the social-media giant announced Twitter Audio Cards, which will allow listeners to listen to audio directly from their Twitter timelines with one click. Users can then dock the song in the corner and continue playback as they browse inside the mobile app.

He's best known for playing the grumpy breakfast loving Ron Swanson on NBC's 'Parks and Recreation', but Nick Offerman has turned his hand to another profession: music video director. He's overseen the delightfully weird video for Tweedy's song, 'Low Key', which also features a host of celebrity cameos.

 

It's a different gig for the actor, usually seen in front of the camera

Tweedy is the latest project from Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, comprised of himself and his son Spencer Tweedy. 'Low Key' is the first single from their first album, 'Sukierae', and the offbeat video shows them going door-to-door in attempts to sell their record to disinterested members of the public. Man of Steel actor Michael Shannon features as the assistant of the record label boss, whilst Melissa McCarthy, Conan O'Brien, Andy Richter and Chance the Rapper feature amongst the bemused homeowners who are visited by the band. There's also a very strange twist at the end of the video, but we won't ruin the surprise!

Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper have piqued the interest of their fans after a tweet from one of the rappers gave away that the pair could be working on a collaborative EP. Childish Gambino tweeted "now that chance finally released his verse on "worst guys", maybe he can hurry up and finish the rest of our EP #hinthint."

The day after Chance debuted his unreleased verse for Gambino's 'The Worst Guys,' the 'Heartbeat' star took to Twitter to tease their fans with word of a possible joint release. There is no word on when the project will arrive, but hopefully Childish's nudging will see things moving in the right way as soon as possible.

Having seen Chance's name on Gambino's Because The Internet song, it was naturally assumed that the Chicago hip hop star would be featured in a verse until fans realised that all they'd be getting was a hook. However, performing yesterday at the Governor's Ball, Childish welcomed Chance onstage to perform the previously-unheard lyrics from the track.
