As the new year brought with it a swath of new releases, Years & Years reached number one with Night Call, Young T & Bugsey dropped Truth Be Told and George Ezra released his comeback single - Anyone For You. The Wombats told us to Fix Yourself, Not The World, Ella Henderson sang of being Brave and Twin Atlantic, unlike the PM, gave us Transparency. Whilst Charli XCX, Doja Cat, Central Cee, Blossoms, Charlie Puth and Maverick Sabre (among many others) were setting the airwaves and streaming sites alight a distraught Adele caused a storm when she announced at the 11th hour that she would not be able to fulfil her Las Vegas residency dates. Tears were also shed as it was announced that Meat Loaf had passed away on January 20th. Following the sad announcement of his death, three of his albums re-charted in the top 30, including his seminal 1977 release Bat Out Of Hell. January also brought us some great new albums and we've hand picked our favourite five for you here.

The nominations for the 63rd annual Grammy Awards are finally here, but it's left a lot of people scratching their heads in bewilderment. Not only are there a number of names on there that have somehow avoided hitting the radar all year, but there are also a few prominent artists missing from certain categories.

Perhaps the most notable is the absence of The Weeknd from all categories; a remarkable notion when you consider the fact that After Hours is his most iconic release yet, with the song Blinding Lights being one of the most well-played tracks of the year. The Weeknd hasn't taken this snub lying down either, Tweeting earlier today: "The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency..."

It's been a terrible month for music with the coronavirus destroying the live circuit and condemning us to our homes, but it's not been all bad. We've had these incredible albums to listen to. Silver linings!

Childish Gambino - 3.15.20

Donald Glover's fourth album, his first RCA release and supposedly his final release under his "Childish Gambino" moniker, is probably one of the most exciting albums of 2020 so far. 3.15.20 is a conceptual, trippy record with a rich, retro vibe. We're not even mad that most of the tracks don't have proper titles; we'll make it our business to learn them anyway.

The coronavirus seems to be affecting every area of our lives including music at the moment, so we've decided to give it its own section in our Weekly Music Highlights. Along with the Nashville tornado disaster and Riz Ahmed's Brexit truths, we hope music will be a way to bring us together in these tough times.

The home of country music, Nashville, Tennessee, was struck by four tornadoes on Tuesday (March 3rd) killing 25 people and destroying numerous buildings and homes. Today a benefit gig under the name 'To Nashville, With Love' will take place at the Marathon Music Works, with acts such as Soccer Mommy, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, Dan Auerbach and more set to perform. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift has donated $1million to a relief fund and expressed her own devastation over the damage of the city she calls home, and a number of guitar companies such as Gibson, Heritage and Harmony are also offering their support to any musicians who may have lost equipment in the disaster with new replacement schemes.

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey has been teasing the release of her fifth studio album, with the working title Norman F***ing Rockwell, since the end of the summer. This week, she trailed it with the release of new single and video, with the unwieldy title ‘hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me…but I have it’, representing the fourth cut from the LP. There’s no release date as yet, but the last we heard LDR5 was going to appear in the first half of 2019.

The Weeknd and Daft Punk are being sued by a singer-songwriter for plagiarism regarding elements of their collaborative track ‘Starboy’.

The French dance music hooked up with The Weekend – real name Abel Tesfaye – worked on the 2016 hit single ‘Starboy’ together, the lead single from The Weeknd’s album of the same name. Now, according to TMZ, the two artists are the subject of a reported $5 million lawsuit from Somali-American poet and singer Yasminah, who claims they ripped off her song ‘Hooyo’.

Yasmin ‘Yasminah’ Mohamed, who recorded her track way back in 2009, accuses The Weeknd and Daft Punk of “stealing the beat” for their track, as well as utilising the “same hook, same key and a similar tempo”.

More than a year after they called off their relationship and went their separate ways, Bella Hadid and R&B singer The Weeknd are rumoured to be rekindling their romance after they were spotted kissing at Cannes this week.

The former couple were seen together sharing a kiss at the Magnum x Alexander Wang party at the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France on Thursday night (May 10th). They greeted each other with a hug and a kiss, having both arrived separately, but later they were spotted locking lips, and Hadid stroking his face.

The latest development came after they were allegedly spotted backstage together after The Weeknd’s headline set at California’s Coachella festival a few weeks ago. However, Hadid quickly moved to shut down the rumours of a reunion, saying “it wasn’t me”.

The Weeknd has stirred his fans into a frenzy by releasing a new surprise album in time for the Easter weekend, titled My Dear Melancholy.

Speculation had been rife over the previous few weeks that the megastar R&B singer, real name Abel Tesfaye, has been working on new material.

On Thursday evening (March 29th), The Weeknd’s official Instagram page refreshed with an image of some shadowy red and black artwork, with ‘My Dear Melancholy’ written in the top-left corner, and simply captioned ‘tonight’.
