Daft Punk (formed 1993)
Daft Punk is a French electronic music duo that rose to fame in the late 1990s.
Formation: Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo met at Lycée Carnot secondary school, Paris, in 1987. They formed group Darlin' in 1992 with some school friends Laurent Brancowitz, Bangalter and Homem-Christo. The band chose to name themselves after a Beach Boys song, yet the indie rock trio's career was short. Melody Maker, a British music paper, described the band's music "daft punk" and thus Bangalter and de Homem-Christo had a new name.
Career: Daft Punk's career started out when they handed a demo tape to Stuart Macmillan from Slam and Soma Quality Recordings, while at a rave in the grounds of EuroDisney, Paris, in 1993. The tape went on to help their debut single, 'The New Wave', which was released in 1994. This was followed by 1995's 'Da Funk', which became their first real commercial success. This led to Daft Punk employing Pedro Winter (Busy P), a promoter of Hype nightclubs, as their manager. These two singles made it onto Daft Punk's debut studio album, 'Homework'. The album was considered to be an innovation in dance music due to a mix of electro, techno and house music. After their 'Around The World' single became a huge success, renowned directors like Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze and Roman Coppola signed on to direct their music videos. These videos were later released as 'D.A.F.T. - A Story About Dogs, Androids, Firemen and Tomatoes'. In 2001, Daft Punk released 'Discovery', which went on to reach the number two spot in the UK charts. In 2003, Daft Punk produced a feature animation entitled '5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem'. The animation received an accompanying album, 'Daft Club', which was a collection of previously exclusive membership remixes. In 2005, they released 'Human After All' to mixed reviews. In the following year, Daft Punk released a CD / DVD anthology entitled 'Musique Vol. 1 1993-2005' which showed off new music videos. They also released 'Human After All: Remixes' and in May 2006, Daft Punk's first directed film, 'Daft Punk's Electroma' was released at the Cannes Film Festival. In February 2008, Daft Punk made an appearance at the 50th Grammy Awards, performing a reworking of 'Stronger' with Kanye West. In 2009, Daft Punk revealed that they were working on the score for 'Tron: Legacy', which would consist of 24 new tracks. After releasing the soundtrack, Daft Punk began working on their fourth studio album, 'Random Access Memories'. The album was released on 17th May 2013, and featured the phenomenal 19th April hit single 'Get Lucky', featuring Pharrell Williams. On 10th March 2014, a previously unreleased song named 'Computerized' was discovered online, featuring elements of the 'Tron: Legacy' soundtrack and vocals from Jay-Z.
