You know it's Christmas when the John Lewis advert finally arrives, and perhaps the most exciting thing about it is hearing a sensational new cover of a classic tune alongside it. This year it features Manchester band Elbow doing the 1969 Beatles number 'Golden Slumbers'.
The song is set to appear on their forthcoming compilation album 'The Best Of' which is out later this month. Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and produced by George Martin, the song is from The Beatles' iconic eleventh album 'Abbey Road'. It's based on the Thomas Dekker lullaby 'Cradle Song'.
The cover is set against John Lewis' latest ad campaign: Moz the Monster. It's the story of a little boy who can't sleep because he's too busy playing with the enormous monster under his bed all night and end up tired during the day. This year they're raising money for Barnardos Children's Charity.
Elbow released their latest studio album of original material, 'Little Fictions', in February this year featuring the singles 'Magnificent (She Says)', 'All Disco' and 'Gentle Storm'. The latter had a video made for it directed by Kevin Godley, inspired by Godley & Creme's song 'Cry' and starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
Currently performing a string of dates in North and South America, this week hitting up Santa Ana, Los Angeles and Mexico City, they are set to embark on a European tour in 2018. From February to March, they'll perform in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, kicking off at Dublin's 3Arena on February 24th and concluding at London's O2 Arena on March 7th.
'The Best Of' will be released on November 24th 2017.
