The 41-year-old stunt man, best known as for his work on the U.S. series Jackass, climbed a 100 foot construction crane on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood on August 9th. Glover climbed to the top of the crane with an inflatable orca bearing the words ‘SeaWorld Sucks’. He also set off fireworks from the top of the crane.
The emergency services were called and, according to reports in the BBC, more than 80 firefighters responded at the scene. Glover later climbed down and was arrested. He was charged on several counts including conspiracy to commit trespass and filming without permission.
Glover issued a statement on Instagram in which he explained how he wasn’t repentant about his actions as the ‘crane-climbing, fireworks debacle really turned out to be pretty meaningful in the end’.
‘I mean, if your goal is to make a statement about captivity, you may as well get yourself locked up!’
This is not the first time Glover has staged a stunt against SeaWorld. In 2014, he climbed on to a road sign in Orlando which bore directions and the distance to SeaWorld. Next to the word ‘SeaWorld’ he added a sign reading ‘Sucks’.
PETA and other animal rights organisations have long campaigned against SeaWorld. However, the plight of the animals living in captivity at SeaWorld first came to mainstream attention with the release of the 2013 documentary Blackfish. The critically acclaimed documentary primarily centred on one captive orca, Tilikum, who is responsible for the deaths of two of his trainers and one trespasser at SeaWorld. Tilikum is currently kept at SeaWorld Orlando in Florida.
A number of celebrities have spoken out against SeaWorld including Ewan McGregor, Olivia Wilde, Matt Damon and Willie Nelson. Recently, former Real Housewives of Miami star Joanna Krupa posed naked, wearing just body paint, for a PETA campaign to raise awareness for SeaWorld.
