Adele looks on course to set a new UK chart record first-week sales, with her latest album 25 selling 300,000 copies on its first day of release. The singer’s third album is currently second only to Oasis’ 1997 album, Be Here Now, which sold 424,000 copies on its first day of release.

AdeleAdele’s 25 looks set to break UK chart records.

Be Here Now currently holds the record for the most first-week sales, with 695,761 copies. Then it’s Take That’s Progress, which sold 518,601 copies during its first week in November 2010. “Adele truly is a once-in-a-generation artist. Her appeal spans age groups and genres, from children to teenagers, right through to mums and dads, uncles and aunties,” said Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company.

“With this mammoth first-day sales tally, Adele has taken a further step towards greatness. Over the next few days we will find out whether it can pass the magic half a million sales mark.” 25’s sales were probably helped by the fact Adele decided to keep the album off streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.

According to The Guardian industry sources are expecting the album to sell about 700,000 copies in the UK in its first week, while in the US the total could be 2.5m. About 1m CDs have been distributed to UK stores, with 3.6m shipped across the US.

But 25 still has a long way to go if it wants to match the success of Adele’s previous record, 21. So far 30m copies of the album have been sold globally since its release in January 2011. However it was more of a slow starter than 25 looks set to be, having shifted just 208,000 copies in the UK in its first week.
