The Brit Awards has pulled off a major coup by landing Adele to perform at the 2016 awards ceremony.

The singer has cemented her position as the biggest pop star in the world in the last couple of months, with her long-awaited third album 25 smashing pretty much every chart record going since its release on November 20th.

In both the US and the UK, it notched up the highest first-week sales of all time (3.38 million and 800,000 respectively), while it also became the most downloaded chart topping album ever. With a performance at the Brits and, doubtless, a handful of nominations to come, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see the 27 year old singer add to her tally of four awards.

“You couldn't get a bigger name in music right now,” said the Brit Awards organisation’s chairman Max Lousada. “Adele is having an exceptional moment and The Brits are delighted to be a part of her history, her present and future.”

Having won the Critics’ Choice Award in 2008, Adele has picked up three subsequent gongs, for British Female Solo Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for 21 in 2012, and British Single of the Year in 2013 for her Bond theme ‘Skyfall’.

Famously, she delivered an emotional rendition of her hit single ‘Someone Like You’ in 2011, and made headlines the following year after she gave host James Corden the one-fingered salute after he had cut off her acceptance speech to make way for final performers Blur.

2016 is set to be a huge year for Adele, with extensive tours of North America, the UK and Ireland pencilled in.

She’s the first performer to be confirmed for the 2016 Brit Awards, which will be hosted by Ant and Dec and broadcast live on ITV, hopefully with nobody falling off the stage this time.
