The Unbroken director, who adopted 14-year-old son Maddox from a Cambodian orphanage in 2002, is returning to her son's native country to film First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers.

The movie is based on Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung's tale of survival during the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s, and in preparation for the project, Jolie met with Hun Sen in Phnom Penh to discuss the importance of adapting the story.

Following their meeting, the Prime Minister's spokesman, Eang Sophalleth, told reporters, "The film reflects facts in Cambodia and will be a way for younger generations to understand the country."

The support from Hun Sen weighs heavily on the project, since he was a former mid-ranking Khmer Rouge member. After he defected, he became and outspoken member of leader Pol Pot's opposition.

Jolie has recruited her son Maddox to work behind the scenes on the film in the hope that he'll learn more about his native culture and history. The movie is slated for release on Internet streaming site Netflix in late 2016.
