The Tomb Raider star was reported to have severed ties with The Halo Trust in May, 2014 after 18 months amid a disagreement over plans to use the charity's money to pay two other trustees to undertake a structural review of the organisation.

Jolie's spokeswoman has now confirmed the reports, telling Britain's The Times newspaper the actress stepped down "because of concerns she had relating to the way the trust was run. She remains supportive of the work of the Halo staff in the field, and believes strongly in the vision of a world free of landmines."

However, a representative for The Halo Trust insists Jolie's departure was not linked to the payments, telling Reuters, "If Ms Jolie's departure had anything to do with the amount (the two trustees) were being paid, it was not communicated to us at the time... Ms. Jolie remains very supportive of The Halo Trust."

The Halo Trust rose to prominence in the 1990s after British royal Diana, Princess of Wales threw her support behind the organisation and famously visited a minefield in Angola to see the charity's work.
