Ben Affleck may have failed to get the Best Director Oscar nomination– something that many thought was outrageous, considering his film Argo got seven nods in total, including the coveted Best Picture – but the director certainly won’t come out of award season empty handed.
Apart from the predictions for Golden Globe success, Argo has also managed to nab several other awards along the way. On Thursday, January 10, the actor took home the biggest awards – Best Picture and Best Director at the Critics Choice Awards. Affleck looked genuinely surprised as he heard his name being announced and, while accepting his award, the doodles on his hands revealed that he really hadn’t been prepared for an acceptance speech. During his time onstage, Affleck also made light of his Oscar snub, starting his speech with: "I would like to thank the Academy. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. This is the one that counts."
Perhaps there’s just a tiny hint of bitterness in that statement. Well, we’re certainly happy for Mr Affleck and his acclaim for Argo. And let’s not forget that with seven nominations, there is still a huge chance of Oscar success for the film, if not so much for the director. And even without the awards, the man still gets to go to all of those after parties. No reason to complain then.
