Grace Jones Hits Out At Unoriginal Modern Pop Artists

Grace Jones Rihanna Nicki Minaj Miley Cyrus Rita Ora Lady GaGa

Grace Jones has unleashed a tirade of criticism at all manner of modern pop stars, from Minaj to Miley, by describing them as “middle of the stream” and lamenting the current state of the music industry, in her new autobiography.

‘I’ll Never Write My Memoirs’ is released on September 29th, but as a taster she has published a few excerpts from the new book via Time Out. In one of them, Jones complains that a whole host of pop stars have copied her style but have no “long-term vision”, coming off as unoriginal and therefore easily replaceable.

“Trends come along and people say, ‘follow that trend’,” she writes. “There’s a lot of that around at the moment: 'Be like Sasha Fierce. Be like Miley Cyrus. Be like Rihanna. Be like Lady GaGa. Be like Rita Ora and Sia. Be like Madonna.’ I cannot be like them – except to the extent that they are already being like me.”

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga - Cheek To Cheek Album Review

One of the biggest trends in music today is that new rhythms, beats and backing vocals are sounding more and more like the old ones. Vintage and retro have defined some of the big hits of the last few years, from Pharrell's 'Get Lucky' and 'Happy' to Meaghan Trainor's 'All About That Bass'. Most of these sounds only call back to the 1970s and maybe the 50s and 60s for their funk and their groove, and for some people that's just not enough. So leave it to Lady GaGa, never one to go halfway on anything, to team up with good old-fashioned showman Tony Bennett to deliver us all the way back to the Roaring 20s and the era of swing with their collaboration album titled 'Cheek To Cheek'.

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga - Cheek To Cheek Album Review

If you've come into this album thinking that this will be a blend of Lady Gaga's pioneering pop methods and Tony Bennett's timeless style, I regret to inform you that it has missed the opportunity to feature Tony Bennett's cover of 'Bad Romance'. 'Cheek To Cheek' plays it straight, with Lady Gaga ditching her usual brand in favor of a 20s crooner. This is all Bennett's wheelhouse, and she really fits right in. Lady Gaga fits effortlessly into the role of the saucy dame, best seen in 'Goody Goody' where she cops her native New York accent to complain that she is no "goody goody", adopting a sly attitude as Bennett tries to romance her in all the wrong (yet right) ways.

Bennett and Gaga are both at their best in the call-and-reply songs, employing fitting referential metaphors in 'They All Laughed', convincingly affectionate back-and-forth in 'Cheek To Cheek' and, what must be one of the most comical lines, fitting the words "silly gigolos" into the album opener 'Anything Goes'. Gaga and Bennett also deliver two solos each, although Bennett's 'Sophisticated Lady' and Gaga's 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye' and 'Lush Life' sound a bit too similar as slow-paced piano ballads in comparison to Bennett's string-dominated 'Don't Wait Too Long'. Other songs pack more instrumental flair, with the manic energy of 'Firefly' and the jazzy overtones of 'I Can't Give You Anything' conjuring images of smoke-filled old boys clubs. And, of course, the duo's rendition of 'It Don't Mean a Thing' closes the album with a bang.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Review

Very Good

It's taken nearly 10 years for filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and graphic novelist Frank Miller to get around to making this sequel, but it was worth the wait because the technical advancements make this second triptych of stories even more visually stunning, and the emotional resonance is even stronger. This is a lean, mean noir thriller that doesn't waste a single moment as it rips through three interlocking plots that centre on revenge for the events of the first movie.

Two people are out to get even with the ruthlessly nasty politician Roark (Powers Booth). Watched over by the hulking Marv (Mickey Rourke), gun-toting stripper Nancy (Jessica Alba) is still heartbroken after Roark killed her beloved Hartigan (Bruce Willis), who appears to her as a ghostly apparition. And Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is determined to bring Roark down by humiliating him at his own high-stakes poker game, even though merely having uncanny good luck might not be enough. But the main story centres on private eye Dwight (Josh Brolin), who is stopped in his tracks when he encounters his old flame Ava (Eva Green), a bombshell who has power over most men she meets. She asks for help with a domestic problem, and Dwight is powerless to walk away even though he knows something is fishy.

As before, these stories unfold exactly as they would in a graphic novel, with blunt dialogue and strikingly visual imagery black and white that's spotted with flashes of colour. Aside from Ava's blue coat, that colour is usually red: hair, nails, lips, but not blood, which splashes in glaring white. It looks fantastic in (ahem) eye-popping 3D. And it's fiercely violent as death hovers around the residents of Basin City, especially the lawless Old Town district. But there's just as much emphasis on surging passion, including some surprisingly graphic sexuality that plays up how helpless men are around a scantily clad woman. Indeed, it's rare to see an action film in which the women are so resolutely in charge.

Six Of The Worst Grammatically Incorrect Song Lyrics

Ariana Grande Justin Timberlake Lady GaGa Timbaland

Everybody loves a good pop song, but sometimes you can’t help but cringe when the lyrics are just  bad beyond comprehension. Pop obviously isn't exactly known for its strengths in the lyric department, but it’s hard to ignore when lyrics aren’t just bad - they’re grammatically incorrect, too.

Ariana Grande TCAAriana Grande and Max Martin fought over grammatically incorrect lyrics in 'Break Free'

Believe it or not, the actual artists behind the songs may feel the same way, too. Ariana Grande recently spoke about the arguments in the studio that she had with producer Max Martin while recording her new album, My Everything. The issue? Some of the lyrics to her recent single, ‘Break Free,’ made no sense at all. “I fought him on it the whole time,” Grande said to Time. “‘I am not going to sing a grammatically incorrect lyric, help me, God!’ Max was like, ‘It’s funny — just do it!’” Grande eventually gave in to Martin’s demands, singing lines like “Now that I’ve become who I really are,” and “I only wanna die alive.”

Lady Gaga, R. Kelly, Terry Richardson And The ‘Do What You Want’ Video We Wish We Hadn’t Seen

Lady GaGa

Remember that Lady GaGa and R.Kelly video which was supposed to be released last year but never materialised? Well this week we all got a pretty good idea about why the video for ‘Do What U Want’ never saw the light of day when TMZ leaked clips from the previously unseen video. Prepare to be made to feel very uncomfortable by Gaga, R. Kelly and photographer Terry Richardson in a video which really should have never existed.

Lady GagaGaga's 'Do What U Want' video was pulled earlier this year

When the video was originally scrapped earlier this year, Gaga blamed “time constraints” and a fallout with her then management team. But the real reason for the video never airing might have had a lot more to do with its disturbing nature and Gaga’s controversial co-stars. In an article published earlier this week on Page Six, the website reported that the video was pulled due to allegations made against Gaga’s collaborators, with source describing the video as being “directed by an alleged sexual predator, starring another sexual predator. With the theme, ‘I’m going to do whatever I want with your body’? It was literally an ad for rape.”

Who Are Babymetal? Lady Gaga’s ArtRave Support Band

Lady GaGa Babymetal

Babymetal is a group which could only have hailed from Japan, could only have found success thanks to Youtube and could only have been chosen by Lady GaGa as a support act on her 'ArtRave' tour. Three teenaged girls in matching outfits singing and dancing onstage to ‘heavy metal’ music, Babymetal needs to be seen and heard to be believed. Yet after seeing it we’re still not sure if we didn't just imagine the whole thing.

BabymetalMeet Babymetal, the Japanese viral sensations

The origins of Babymetal are found in girl group Sakura Gakuin, a pop act manufacture by a Japanese talent agency, which employs an ever changing line-up. Basically when a member gets too old (ie around 16) they get kicked out (or graduate) from the group. One day the group’s manager had an idea for an interesting musical experiment. “Why don’t we try and fuse metal music with cutesy pop,” we assume he said, and thus Babymetal was created using Sakura Gakuin members Suzuka Nakamoto, Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno.

Unearthed Lady Gaga, R Kelly Video Allegedly Condones Sexual Assault

Lady GaGa R Kelly

A new video clip has surfaced online allegedly containing content from Lady GaGa and R Kelly's scrapped 'Do What U Want' music video. The second single to be released from Gaga's latest album, ARTPOP, 'Do What U Want' has an official video that that is shot very differently to the scenes seen in the new clip.

The song's lyrics express themes of sexual submissiveness, which has been alluded to in several live performances involving the pop star and the R&B singer, but never as explicitly as seen in the Terry Richardson-directed video, which has been leaked by TMZ.

The short excerpt posted on the Gaga Daily Facebook page begins with Gaga on a hospital trolly moaning as R Kelly's hand moves around under her sheet. "Sounds like that medicine's starting to kick in," he says. When then see Gaga coverting nude amongst newspaper gossip headlines related to her personal life and career in a scene soundtracked by 'Do What U Want.'

Lady Gaga In Yet Another Extreme Photoshopping Incident

Lady GaGa

Remember when those untouched Versace images of Lady Gaga cropped up? The Lady’s highly anticipated Spring 2014 Versace campaign turned out to be a bigger hoax than Ray Santilli’s alien autopsy. Everything from her skin colour to the texture of her hair was altered in the images, but the most confusing thing was that she had only recently slammed the use of photoshopping in regards to the her December Glamour cover.

Lady Gaga photoshopping In many recent images Lady GaGa's body has been photoshopped beyond all recognition

At the time of the cover Gaga had said, “I felt my skin looked too perfect. I felt my hair looked too soft. I do not look like this when I wake up in the morning…I don’t even look like this,” in reference to her Gaga-esque hair and hair and makeup. She further added, “It is fair to writer about the change in your magazines. But what I want to see if the change on your covers…When the covers change, that’s when culture changes,” before encouraging people to “fight back against the forces that make them feel like they’re not beautiful.”
