From the director of the science fiction epics District 9 and Elysium comes Neill Blomkamp's latest trek into an unknown world – CHAPPiE.

ChappieCHAPPiE is the first robot who can think and feel for himself

Every child comes into the world full of promise and Chappie is no exception: he is gifted, special and a prodigy. He's also a robot.

Kidnapped at birth by two criminals, the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself becomes the adopted child of a strange and dysfunctional family.

Under the influences of circumstances both good and bad, Chappie relies on his own heart and soul to find his way in the world and to fight back against the forces that are planning on taking him down.

Based on Blookamp's short film from 2004, Tetra Vaal, this film looks set to fall somewhere in between the heady heights of District 9 success and the less than satisfactory offering of Elysium.

Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame takes the role of Chappie’s 'father', an ambitious inventor responsible for creating a robot police force and Hugh Jackman features as his colleague.

However, the biggest obstacle facing this film is not its storyline, realistic ability or interesting plot, it's that the concept of a blurry line between artificial intelligence and human intelligence has been done countless times before.

Can Blomkamp's foray down a well-walked track offer anything new? We'll have to wait and see.
