Drake has shattered the 32 year old record for American Music Award nominations in a single year, picking up an impressive 13 mentions in the 2016 list of nominations that was revealed today.

The Canadian rapper received a baker’s dozen in nominations ahead of the 2016 AMAs, which are held in just over a month’s time. In the process, he beat the late Michael Jackson’s previous all-time-high watermark of 11 nominations back in 1984 when he was basking in the massive success of Thriller.

Having released his fifth album Views earlier this year, the 29 year old star has been nominated in several prestigious categories, such as Artist of the Year, Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Album, Favorite Rap Artist, Favorite Rap Song and Favorite R&B song to name a few. If he wins in any of them, it will represent his first ever American Music Award triumph.

Rachel Platten and Joe Jonas made the announcement on Monday’s edition of ‘Good Morning America’ (October 10th).

Other artists scoring highly in the nomination stakes are Rihanna, with seven nods, and Adele and Justin Bieber with five each. Beyonce and The Chainsmokers each received four nominations, while Bryson Tiller, Twenty One Pilots, Carrie Underwood, Fetty Wap and The Weeknd earned three nominations apiece.

The AMA nominees are decided by what are known as ‘key fan interactions’ measured by Billboard - album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, social media activity, touring etc. Winners are decided by a public vote.

The 2016 American Music Awards will be held on November 20th at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast live on ABC.
