Ed Sheeran performed a short set of songs with Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid in Northern Ireland at the weekend, at McDaid’s sister Brid’s wedding in Londonderry.

After the bride had tied the knot with her fiancé Sandy Stratham at the Beech Hill Country House Hotel, 25 year old Sheeran teamed up with the indie guitarist and songwriter McDaid, 40, for a half-hour performance that included a selection of Snow Patrol and Sheeran hits, plus some cover versions.

The duo, aided and abetted by other Snow Patrol members, played ‘Chasing Cars’, the 2006 hit that made the band internationally famous and was recently declared the most played song on the radio in the last ten years. Performed as the newly-married couple’s first dance, the other wedding guests were seen singing along.

“The wedding guests really were so excited by the performance, everyone was in such good form and it really just lifted the mood of the whole day,” said the hotel’s manager Patsy O’Kane to BBC News, saying that the staff at the venue had no idea that they would be seeing rock royalty in performance.

She added that the entire reception had a “super atmosphere” and was “filled with music and song, soloists and bands… clearly the family love music, they move in those circles.”

The Belfast Telegraph additionally reported that Johnny McDaid’s girlfriend Courteney Cox, to whom he was briefly engaged last year before they broke it off and subsequently reunited a few months later.
