Gary - who was performing his first solo show for years - also performed an impromptu version of Lionel's hit 'Hello' and at one point quipped: "After 20 years I've reached the pinnacle of my career - Standing in for Lionel Richie."
Earlier, Will Young played a number of his hits and admitted on stage he had been feeling unwell all day, while the crowd endured heavy rain while watching James Blunt.
Other acts at the event - which was hosted by BBC Radio 2 breakfast show DJ Chris Evans - included Lenny Kravitz, Beverley Knight, Imelda May and 70s disco legends Chic.
