The long-awaited movie adaptation of Green Day’s American Idiot album has been given a green light from network HBO.

The news was confirmed by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who told the NME that things were finally moving forward with the planned film and he would be reprising his Broadway role as St. Jimmy.

"That’s the plan right now, yeah," Armstrong told the mag.

"We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.”

The film was first confirmed in 2013 and a year later playwright Rolin Jones revealed he was 'finishing up' the script.

"The idea is to get it a little dirtier and a little nastier and translate it into visual terms,” he said in 2014.

“There’s not going to be a lot of dialogue and it probably should be a little shorter, too. After that, it just takes its 'movie time' in getting done."
