The end of last year’s X-Men: First Class saw the shapeshifter Mystique finally come to terms with her identity as a mutant and abandon Charles Xavier for Magneto’s band of rebels. The character’s development will continue in the upcoming sequel Days of Future Past, in which Jennifer Lawrence will reprise her role as the blue mutant. The 23-year-old Oscar winner is currently in the process of filming and she recently spoke to SciFiNow about Mystique’s character development this time round.

Lawrence will reprise the role, which arguably put her on the map.

“Some of the Mystique look is a little different, but we’re still using the same paint. But she’s different in this film too,” she told the website. “She was struggling – like a lot of normal humans – with the way she looked, and she was covered up a lot in the first movie, but this time she is Mutant and proud.”

This time, however, Mystique means business.

You’ll notice Lawrence also mentions some changes to her character’s look. These include switching the body paint for an actual bodysuit, which seems to get the new version closer to Rebecca Romjin’s Mystique, whom fans remember from the first X-Men trilogy. According to Lawrence, her personality will also get closer to the older, more confident mutant that Romjin portrayed. In addition, the stills that director Bryan Singer is steadily releasing via his Twitter, show the blue shapeshifter starring in a number of tense action scenes. The excitement builds for Days of Future Past, the release date for which has been set for July 18, 2014.
