Kim Kardashian is actually doing something useful for once! Or at least she’s talking about doing something useful, so on the bright side of things, it seems like we’re getting somewhere.

Kim Kardashian racismKim says she has become more aware that racism is still alive since having her daughter, North

Kardashian revealed on her Celebuzz blog (rather eloquently, we must admit), that she has been made more aware of the prevalence of racism since giving birth to her daughter North. Kardashian writes, “To be honest, before I had North, I never really gave racism or discrimination a lot of thought. It is obviously a topic that Kanye is passionate about, but I guess it was easier for me to believe that it was someone else’s battle. But recently, I’ve read and personally experienced some incidents that have sickened me and made me take notice. I realize that racism and discrimination are still alive, and just as hateful and deadly as they ever have been.”

Born to a mother of Dutch/British ancestry and a third generation Armenian-American father, Kim may have the glossy black hair and dark eyes typical of her father’s genealogy, but has clearly received little prejudice in her life.
Now engaged to Kanye West, with whom she shares a daughter of mixed race, it is obviously becoming more apparent to Kim that prejudice is still out there.

Kardashian continues, “I feel a responsibility as a mother, a public figure, a human being, to do what I can to make sure that not only my child, but all children, don’t have to grow up in a world where they are judged by the colour of their skin.”

It was only a couple of months ago it was reported that Kim was subject to a racist incident while at the Vienna Ball. Back in February Kardashian reported left the ball after comedian Chris Stephan began prancing around with his face painted black, in reference to Kanye. It was also claimed that a member of the public began shouting racist comments at her as she is in a relationship with a black man.

Kim Kardashian racismKim notes in her blog post that her fiance Kanye West actively fights racism

Let’s hope these aren’t empty words from Ms. Kardashian. She's certainly got the profile to raise some serious awareness to the issue and the potential to do some real good. We’ll have to wait and see whether she takes some action or if her recent post was just for show.
