One Direction have hit back at Noel Gallagher, branding the former Oasis rocker “sad” after he recently criticised them in an interview and said that the boyband’s members were undeserving of fame.

Directioner Liam Payne, 22, laid into Gallagher in an interview with BBC Radio 1 on Wednesday (December 16th), adding that Noel had previously met them and been friendly to them, even on the day that the original interview was published.

“The funny thing was, I met him the day the story came out. I didn’t know it was coming out, and he came up and said, ‘All right, mate? How are you doing?’ I was like, ‘Fine thanks, mate. Nice to meet you’. That was on the same day that Noel was calling 1D “c***suckers”.

Payne, who admitted that he had been a huge fan of Oasis growing up, continued: “The next day I read the story and thought, ‘How sad is that?’ He completely dissed us. Nice to diss your fans, isn’t it?”

48 year old Gallagher, who has been renowned for his outspoken interviews throughout his career, had formerly said that fame was “wasted on these c****” in an interview in which he was making a wider point about the state of the music industry. He added: “Bar Kanye. You watch him on the MTV Awards and you think, ‘You can f****** stay, you’re all right. Who gives a s*** what f****** One Direction do? C***suckers, all of them in rehab by the time they’re 30. Adele, what? Blows my f****** mind.”

This got Liam frustrated, more because of the two-faced attitude rather than the comment itself. “There’s no point,” he continued. “He ripped off half the industry for no reason, and then loved Kanye West. I love Kanye West as much as the next man, but there’s no need to diss poor Adele.”

“They [the Gallagher brothers] don’t think before they speak. You never know who was a fan of your music. Especially when you were as big as they were. Do it with grace. Good old Noel, bless him. I had to have a moan about that at some point. I’m over it.”

One Direction fulfilled their last live commitment associated with their current 'On The Road Again' tour on 'The X Factor' on Sunday night, as they enter a year-long hiatus. They enjoyed another UK Number 1 album with their fifth record, Made in the A.M., last month.
