Three years after she released her last single, Lorde has returned with a brand new original tune entitled 'Green Light'. It's the first song from her long-anticipated second album, and explores what has been a whirlwind last couple of years for the superstar.

LordeLorde unveils new song 'Green Light'

Co-written and co-produced by Jack Antonoff, the song and much of the album was recorded at his home studio in Brooklyn. 'Green Light' is largely based on a relationship breakdown, but Lorde doesn't want people to think of it as a regular break-up song.

'The song is about the start of the last year or so of my life', she explained in an interview with The Edge. 'I moved out of home and into my own house and basically just had this amazing year of independence and freedom and figuring out all this stuff about myself. It started with a relationship thing, so it's kind of a heartbreak song but it's more about that journey to being okay in the end.'

There is, indeed, a certain uplifting edge to the chorus that contrasts with the general melancholy of the rest of the song. A music video has also been released for the track directed by Grant Singer. The song marks her first new material since 2015 when she collaborated with Disclosure on their single 'Magnets' and joined the charity supergroup #KiwisCureBatten for the New Zealand based charity single 'Team Ball Player Thing'.

It's her first solo release since she provided 'Yellow Flicker Beat' for 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Pt. 1' in 2014, and her new album 'Melodrama' - which has been co-produced by Grammy winner Frank Dukes - follows her 2013 debut 'Pure Heroine' which featured the hit singles 'Royals', 'Tennis Court' and 'Team'.

More: David Bowie called Lorde the 'future of music'

A big inspiration for her newest album was a fan of hers; the late David Bowie, to whom she paid tribute at the 2016 Brit Awards following his death. She even recorded parts of the album at New York's Electric Lady studios where Bowie wrote 'Fame' and recorded 'Blackstar'. 'I feel like the whole time spent writing this record, I've had him in my thoughts, I've had him in my heart', she said on BBC Radio 1. 'It's hard not to make something and not think, 'What would David think of this? If I could play it to him, what would he say?''

'Melodrama' is set to be released through UMG, Virgin EMI and Republic on June 15th 2017.
