Ahead of this weekend’s Oscars, many Hollywood insiders are hoping that Meryl Streep might win another award in order to get a chance to publicly trash Donald Trump again. However, one person isn’t so enamoured with her…

Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld has claimed that Streep backed out of a deal to wear a dress designed by him when her camp realised that she wasn’t going to be paid to do so.

This, of course, is in contravention of Lagerfeld’s long-standing rule that Chanel never pays celebrities to wear its clothes – even the most A-list of Hollywood royalty.

“I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress,” the 83 year old German designer told Women’s Wear Daily on Friday (February 24th). A few days later, he said, he received a phone call from a Streep representative. “‘Don’t continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us,’” is what he said they told him.

“After we gift her a dress that’s 100,000 euros [$105,000], we found later we had to pay [for her to wear it],” Lagerfeld seethed. “We give [celebrities] dresses, we make the dresses, but we don’t pay.”

Another representative for 67 year old Streep fired back at the accusations in The Hollywood Reporter later that day, denying what Lagerfeld had claimed and that being paid to wear any gown to a red carpet event was “against her personal ethics”.

When asked what he’s planning to do with the gown – reportedly a gray embroidered silk number from his most recent couture range – the outspoken Lagerfeld said: “She could keep the dress because of the size. It’s couture. It’s perfect for her. A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?”
