The British edition of ‘The Voice’ has revealed its line-up of judges for the upcoming fifth season, with one surprise change in store. As has been widely tipped, Paloma Faith will be taking up the vacant seat left by Rita Ora, who defected to ITV’s ‘The X Factor’ earlier this year.

But, despite recently saying how much he was looking forward to coming back for another season, the legendary Welsh crooner Sir Tom Jones has been axed from the BBC show to be replaced with Culture Club singer Boy George.

The two new judges will be taking their places in the spinning red chairs alongside Kaiser Chiefs lead singer Ricky Wilson and R&B star Will.i.am, the latter of which is now the only original judge from the first season in 2012. It’s a significant shake-up to the panel, which has long struggled to compete alongside Simon Cowell’s show on ITV in terms of breaking a major star in Britain.

Boy George, who has sold more than 100 million singles around the world with his group, said: “I'm a huge fan of the show and have watched and engaged with it from series one. If I can help someone to win I will be delighted. What a wonderful opportunity to share my experiences and help someone move forward with their musical career.”

Former Brit Award winner Paloma Faith also mentioned her suitability for the job, citing her record of helping up-and-coming artists break through to the mainstream. “I'm really excited about working with creative people. I have a long history of helping break artists as in my club nights I booked Kate Nash, Adele, and The Noisettes before they hit the big time.”

Mark Linsey, the Controller of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC, said about the decision to drop Sir Tom: “As one of our original coaches Sir Tom Jones helped make ‘The Voice UK’ a success, and we’d like to thank him for his invaluable contribution to the series.”

Season five will be hosted by Emma Willis and Marvin Humes when it returns in January 2016 on BBC One.
