"I was drunk. Some of those years are absolutely gone," Starr, 74, told The Huffington Post of the years after the split

"I was mad ... for 20 years [although] I had breaks in between of not being."

It's not the first time the drummer has opened up about his alcoholism in the wake of the breakup. He entered rehab with his wife Barbara Bach in 1988 and later told People magazine that the band disbanding left him "absolutely lost."

"It got progressively worse, and the blackouts got worse, and I didn't know where I'd been, what I'd done," he told the magazine. "I knew I had the problem for years. But it plays tricks with your head. Very cunning and baffling is alcohol."

Starr will be inducted into the Hall of Fame by his former band-mate Sir Paul McCartney, while The Eagles' Joe Walsh will perform Starr's music at the ceremony.

"They were all surprised that I wasn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And [Paul] talked to somebody and they're going to put me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and he's going to give me away like I'm the bride and I will accept ... Even though there's very little record industry left, I like to make records because I write.

Starr released his 18th album Postcards from Paradise on March 31.
