Robert Pattinson was left squirming in his seat during what proved to be an extremely uncomfortable interview with the New York Times journalist David Carr on Wednesday night (August 15, 2012). The Twilight star joined the 'Cosmopolis' director David Cronenberg on the panel for a chat in New York, though the live audience were unhappy with Carr's line of questioning.
The journalist solicited a round of boos from the largely female after making an analogy between Pattinson's current personal problems and those of the British royal family. He asked, "So if you and Kristen have trouble it's like Charles and Di having trouble?", which prompted one audience member to yell "Next question!" and another asking, "Come on!". Pattinson quickly backtracked, offering."I think it's because America really wants to have a royal family". According to the New York Daily News, the question was not wholly out of context and the actor "occasionally seemed in over his head intellectually and had to ask for a question to be repeated and admitted to losing track of his thoughts". Nevertheless, Carr swiftly moved the conversation forward, stating, "I wasn't really going there, just so you know", with Pattinson answering, "No, I wouldn't go that far". It was the latest interview for the Twilight star, who is currently promoting Cronenberg's new movie which opened at Cannes earlier this year to mainly positive reviews. Earlier this week, he took part in a fairly jovial chat with Jon Stewart on the host's Daily Show, before heading to ABC's Good Morning America, where he remained largely silent on issues concerning Kristen Stewart.
The American actress issued a public apology to Pattinson after admitting having an affair with her 'Snow White and the Huntsman' director Rupert Sanders. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson met on the set of the first Twilight movie.
