Robin Williams has joined a string of celebs and gone back into rehab. Unlike some other recovering alcoholics, however, the comedy icon hasn’t had any embarrassing public accidents to aid his decision. Instead, his publicist described the move as an part of his “continued commitment” to sobriety.

"After working back-to-back projects, Robin is simply taking the opportunity to fine-tune and focus on his continued commitment, of which he remains extremely proud," his rep tells PEOPLE.

The 62-year-old actor plans to stay at the unnamed rehab facility for several weeks. The rep did not give an exact timeframe, but Williams is scheduled to start filming on Mrs. Doubtfire 2 later this year.

Williams last sought treatment for alcohol abuse in 2006. His history of substance abuse dates back to the beginning of his career, when the actor became addicted to cocaine. He quit cocaine and alcohol altogether in 1982 when his first wife, Valerie, was pregnant with their son Zachary, now 31. Much later, Williams opened up about his substance abuse to PEOPLE magazine. He was also influenced by the untimely death of fellow actor John Belushi, who died on May 5, 1982 of a cocaine/heroin overdose.

"The Belushi tragedy was frightening," Williams said. "His death scared a whole group of show-business people. It caused a big exodus from drugs. And for me, there was the baby coming. I knew I couldn't be a father and live that sort of life."

"Cocaine for me," Williams told in 1988, "was a place to hide. Most people get hyper on coke. It slowed me down."
