A Week In Movies: Stars shine at Comic-Con, Coogan launches Alpha Papa, more Gravity thrills

Comic-Con in San Diego last weekend featured a staggering array of star power presenting their upcoming superhero movies. Chris Evans and Scarlett wound up the fans while talking about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Benicio Del Toro and Djimon Hounsou were on hand to chat about Marvel's interstellar epic Guardians of the Galaxy. Tom Hiddleston talked up Thor: The Dark World. In addition, Hugh Jackman and James Mangold continued their globe-hopping press tour, arriving in San Diego to discuss their new X-men movie The Wolverine, the Japan-set adventure that arrives in US and UK cinemas this weekend. Jennifer Lawrence also turned up to promote The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the next episode in the four-film saga. Meanwhile, The Conjuring dominated the US box office last weekend, shattering the record for an original horror movie. It's also the biggest opening of Saw/Insidious director James Wan's career. The film is a fictionalised version of real events involving ghostbusters Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Formiga), who were also involved in the Amityville case. In England on Wednesday, Steve Coogan held the world premiere of his new action-comedy Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa in Norwich, where the movie is set. He then travelled to London for a more glamorous premiere in Leicester Square that evening. The film opens in the UK next month. Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl star in Rush, the remarkable true story of the rivalry between two 1970s Formula One champions: England's James Hunt and Austria's Niki Lauda. In a new short feature, the actors are joined by director Ron Howard and writer Peter Morgan to talk about making the film and reveal lots of thrilling racing footage. And director Alfonso Cuaron released a series of one-scene trailers for his new thriller Gravity, which stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as astronauts caught in a terrifying situation while on a Space Shuttle mission. The clips are long-takes that leave us breathless.
