'From Deewee': Soulwax Are Finally Back With A Proper Album

Soulwax 2 many DJs

It's been more than a decade, but Soulwax have finally returned with a brand new studio album entitled 'From Deewee', named after their own record label. It might have taken ten years for the Dewaele brothers to bring us another collection of new material, but it only took them a day to record the thing on February 7th 2017 in Ghent, Belgium.

'From Deewee' comes a year after their soundtrack album for the Felix Van Groeningen film 'Belgica', but it's the first proper album since 2005's 'Nite Versions'. Since then they have made an appearance in and curated the compilation album 'This Is Radio Soulwax' - featuring the likes of Franz Ferdinand, LCD Soundsystem and Tiga - and released a remix record entitled 'Most of the Remixes'.

Shakedown Festival - Waterhall, Brighton - August 15th 2015 Live Review

Back to give the people of Sussex its annual dousing of electronic music, Shakedown fans returned in their numbers for an evening of debauchery and hard beats. Juxtaposing that of more commercial contemporary electronic festivals like Creamfields, Shakedown is a one day event that offers something different to the commerce and pop glamour that electronic music has now become. With a line up that boasts 2manydjs, DJ EZ, Jaguar Skills, Sigma, Camo and Krooked and Sub Focus, it would become easy to point the finger at the obvious crowd drawers. Though not at Shakedown.

Shakedown Festival 2015 - Live Review

With two 2manydjs headlining the festival, it was surprising to see the sheer dominance every other stage had next to the internationally known disc jockeys. And maybe this is what makes Shakedown different to most commercial electronic festivals, the hardcore drum n bass faithful that make the event what it is. Using record labels like Defected in the House and Hospitality Records, the festival offers more niche, more specialised and far less commercial music for house  and drum n bass respectively.

With a host of MCs backing the turntablists, the drum n bass tent saw the cult legend Sub Focus warm up the crowd before Camo and Krooked took the headline set, whist MK and Oliver Dollar took the reins for the final few sets in the house tent. The sheer size of the Hospitality Records tent dwarfed all the other arenas, and probably had 50% of the festival's attendance inside it. At one point, an olive branch felt like it should be offered to the Belgian Brothers (2manydjs) who probably had no idea how petit and incomparable their tent and crowd size was to the rest. It was very transparent to see who the main drawers of Shakedown were.

Swedish producer and DJ Avicii is trying something different at next weekend's Ultra Music Festival - which promises to turn Miami into a three day rave in the sunshine. Avicii, whose song 'Wake Me Up' is Spotify's most played track ever, is setting up a concept store pop-up at the festival and will sell a variety of branded items including t-shirts, flip-flops, hats and condoms.

Avicii's manager Ash Pournouri spoke to Billboard about the one-week only pop-up, which will be located on South Beach's Lincoln Rd, titled, quite simply, Avicii Store.

The Secret Garden Party 2013 lightning strike
Some Secret Garden Party artwork was damaged by Tuesday's storm

The Secret Garden Party festival has been struck by a bolt of lightning ahead of its opening on July 25th 2013.

The Cambridgeshire independent festival, which has played host to a range of musicians and artists since it started in 2004, was on the end of a particularly nasty storm last night (July 23rd 2013), and suffered a dramatic lightning strike on a large art installation that had been put up prior to the weekend event. It also damaged the Lake Stage in the middle of the lake at the Mill Hill Field, Grange Farm venue in Abbots Ripton. Event organiser Fred Fellowed informed the press, 'It was a brutal storm last night; a good watering for the garden but our lake art installation took a direct hit around 2am.' Though, he was able to look on the amusing side of their bad luck: 'I wonder if we are inviting trouble by having the theme 'Superstition' this year?'
