Adam Lambert has defended Miley Cyrus' controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance.

The former 'American Idol' runner-up slammed the 20-year-old star's critics after she was slated for her saucy on-stage antics with Robin Thicke during a performance of his 'Blurred Lines' hit on Sunday (25.08.13), in which she gyrated around the married father-of-one while wearing a nude-coloured bikini.

Adam wrote on Twitter: ''And listen if it wasn't ur cup of tea--- all good but why is everyone spazzing? Hey - she's doin something right. We all talkin. (sic)''

The 31-year-old singer continued to defend the blonde beauty, despite insisting he wasn't actually saying he ''liked'' Miley's risqué performance, and admitted he was glad her controversial moves had sparked a debate.

He wrote: ''Hold up! I didn't actually state whether or not I liked @MileyCyrus performance. I merely said she was having fun and to cut her some slack

''Whew folks are all heated bout this. Hilarious. I can't help it that I'm a contrarian -- just another healthy debate. (sic)''

Despite Adam leaping to Miley's defence, the 'We Can't Stop' hitmaker has been widely criticised for the performance by several stars including Cyndi Lauper, who likened the routine to a 'Girls Gone Wild' softcore porn video.
