The album beat the previous single-week sales record made by Nsync’s No Strings Attached in 2002, which launched with 2.42 million copies sold. 25 has also quickly become the biggest-selling album of 2015, surpassing the 1.8 million copies Taylor Swift has sold of 1989.

Over in the UK, 25 debuted on top of the album chart, becoming the biggest number one album ever, selling 800,307 copies. The album now holds the record for the highest opening week sales in Official Chart history, beating Oasis’ Be Here Now.

The record is also also the most downloaded number one album ever, with 252,423 digital copies sold this week. Speaking about 25’s success, Martin Talbot, Chief Executive, Official Charts Company said: “The massive impact of 25 this week marks the moment that Adele has transformed herself from a phenomenon of our age to an all-time great.”
