Sony want annual Spider-Man and Spider-man spin-offs to dominate cinemas
Not content with the upcoming Amazing Spider Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and expected to do big business at the box office, Sony are looking to release a version of the superhero film every year in a bid to boost their presence on the blockbuster scene.
Spider-Man 2 battles Electro in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2
The revelation arrives from a Variety report, in which Sony’s failings in the movie industry are highlighted, and their success stories tipped for further mining. Spiderman, Sony’s biggest franchise in cinema, will be excavated annually.
"We are expanding the Spider-Man universe into the Sinister Six and Venom, so that we have Spider-Man movies every year," said co-chairman Amy Pascal to Variety, confirming the intentions for yearly Spider-Man action.
Venom, in particular, is a character Sony is working hard on branching out. He was most recently seen in the last of the Toby Maguire's, aka: Spider-Man 2, which was an unmitigated disaster for Sony, who, with After Earth and White House Down, posted an operating loss of $181 million for the fiscal second quarter on Oct. 31 according to the studio’s consolidated financial reports.
Also slated for yearly visits is The Sinister 6, a supervillian team that could comprise any and all of Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Electro, The Vulture, Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter; any film surrounding this motley crew would also surely include Spider-Man himself.
Alex Kurtzman – the man behind the Star Trek script - will direct Venom from a screenplay co-written by Roberto Orci – a perennial collaborator – and Ed Solomon. Sinister Six film is to be written by Drew Goddard, who may also direct. He was behind Cabin in the Woods. And finally, it has been confirmed that Marc Webb will come back to do a third Amazing Spider-Man film.
